No water for employees in CLT

Charlie:
I can't seem to edit the other post. While I can not speak for the entire ramp, last night (Monday) was the first time my work area has been given water. I can assure you that no one where I work had received water until last night. I'm sorry to say that much of the time we get passed over. So if I posted something that was not entirely correct, please accept my apology.

Harry,
talk to Bobby G. he collects 2.00 from everyone in the Bagroom once a week and brings
a ice chest with chilled Bottle water . Exclusively for the Bagroom folks. If you want the free stuff
I suggest you have the lead to request to the S/M to have the water wagon come by. I myself have
run water before and am guilty of bypassing the Bagroom thinking mainly of the folks in the bins or on
the end of the belt loading in the direct sun.

The fact that someone needs to buy water weekly says there is not adequate water being provided. Kudos for taking on the problem, but maybe management should step up too.

Dude, there is adequate water AVAILABLE on the CLT ramp. It is up to the agent to obtain their own water, whatever the source may be. Why does everyone seem to believe it is the responsibility of the company to provide either bottled water, or bring water around on a truck to the agents?

I am a former manager in CLT, and I made it my personal priority to make sure there was cold bottled water provided to the agents on D-Con every day when the temperature was above 85 degrees. It was in my best interest to keep the operation going at all costs. Unfortunately, since I left 2 years ago, the company has decided that bottle water for employees is an expense that they cannot afford to cover anymore. Henceforth, they are reverting back to the basic language of the contract and are providing water fountains and water coolers. I hate it that the managers are not pushing harder for bottled water, but it is what it is in these difficult economic times.

Those pesky employees just want and want and want. The contact says
Come on its WATER
Lets spell it out with management in future contract
Pens
Stapler
Paper
Keen pads
foul weather gear (all aspect)
Badge holders
etc.
etc.
List must go on and on and on
Because the contract says
ITS WATER
Contract says!

Spin I worked in CLT for 14 years in MTC Dept most of it on the line never seen a water fountain plane side on the ramp when the employee actually needs it while working outside, never saw a plane loaded or unloaded in the breakroom.

Water should be reasonably available at each work location. I agree that bottled water is actually probably unreasonable, and I don't imply that such should be provided. What's so hard, however, with providing water jugs with spigots at each location? I'm not familiar with the layout of the ramp in CLT, but why can't the Company buy a jug for every ten gates or so on the ramp, one for each transfer point location, and one (or more as appropriate) for the bagroom? You're talking 15-20 jugs probably, one time, make the employees happy, and probably reduce OJIs.

Also, you'r truck suggestion isn't far fetched, that is what they do in PHX, and have for years.

Years ago they had water jugs outside against the terminal, but some very smart employees decided to dip their bandannas in them, and yet once again, company removed them instead of educating the employees.

The answer may be fairly simple. Anytime you're hot/thirsty drop what you're doing and head to the water fountain. If it takes 5 minutes longer to unload/load the plane, get the connect bags delivered, get the bags to the plane or baggage claim belt, so be it.

If anything is said by management, refer them to the company material on hot weather and the importance of hydration.

Jim:
A big thumbs up here.

File a complaint with the DOL.
See how quick you get hydration!

There is no complaint to be filed with the DOL.

First post, but read this forum all the time. I've got 10 summers in phx. The company use to provide water-coolers that you filled with ice and filled with a filtered water spigot. They even went as far as building brackets on bins under jetway. I think they swapped out the coolers every other year. But lo-and-behold some agents thought this was their own personal shower. You wouldn't believe some of the things they would do. After awhile of watching that you wouldn't even think about drinking that water. A 64oz cup from Circle K will last you 3 flts and just go back and fill up if you have more than that. Another thing important is to eat. Everyone I saw go down in the heat says they drank lots of water, but didn't have anything in their stomach. Keep an eye out for each other, cause you know the company won't.
