I heard although I have yet to attend a purser meeting, that they are talking about the 757 getting a new business class lie flat sleeper seat for the new flights they have planned for Northern and Central Brazil, also for Europe from the NE.

I have only heard second hand. Anyone know from attending a meeting, or news from sometwhere else in the company about this?

Wouldn't this create a new subfleet?

It does and it would operate though a number of new cities from JFK and BOS to Europe. No more sellling all coach 757 there. From Miami to Northern and Central Brazil. Recife, salvador, Brazillia and others.

At TWA we had four of our 27 757's configured with 16 reclining FC seats, as opposed to 22 seats in the other configuration. While this does create a subfleet, it was deemed necessary in order to attract the high yield passengers on these routes. Occasionally there would be an equipment sub which would either piss off the pax, or if subbed onto a domestic flight, make them very happy.

A subfleet doesn't have to be all bad, if it brings in needed revenue. After all, mechanically the AC are identical.

At my meeting they said that research is being done but nothing specific. Lie-Flat seats are a consideration but not a definite option. The real concern was the additional flight range and how to enhance the 757 to profitably run the new routes. Sounds like it is still on the drawing board.

The only fleet I've heard of getting new biz seats is the 767-300 fleet. Guess I'll have to do some research.

When I first read the title I thought AA was looking to do what UA did to its transcon service out of JFK to LAX by having a Premium service fleet. How is AA competing with UA on this route at the moment?

We are flying 3 class 767's against UAL's 3 class 757's. Once they have the internet access I think they will steal away some people from us.

Why would you need a lie- flat seats on flights from MIA to northern Brazilian cities that are only 4 hrs or so long? Same on routes to Europe that may be under consideration, these are mainly pleasure routes that may not command a revenue premium.
