The single snack items for purchase program on US East will be discontinued beginning 11/1, with sales continuing until supplies are depleted. The program might return in the future.

It was also announced that F/A's will announce if any extra BOB items are available after the initial pass is made in an effort to decrease spoilage of the perishable items.

Well this is great news!

I hate selling all that stuff. I know it's just dreaming, but I would like to see us sell vouchers online or when the PAX buys their ticket. Poeple could use their credit cards for the purchase and we wouldn't have to deal with all the cash.

Yes, as a passenger I would love to buy vouchers for "on board items", such as BOB, drinks in Coach, headsets, etc. I can expense these things without receipts, yet charging it to my corporate card would make life a lot easier.

The announcement has been a procedure at HP for a while, but there is rarely anything left to sell other than a snack box. Most of the time we run out of the hot sandwich and cold club sandwich. There was a test program where pax could pre-order their meal and pay for it in advance to take the money out of the FA's hands but not sure what the results are. This was pre-merger stuff, now that the merger is in motion, it appears that things are moving the HP way in some cases. There has been talk of a handheld device to be used onboard for onboard purchases, but no word on the status of this due to the merger. They would like to see the cash out of FA hands, too many problems with it.

By the way, new menu for first class on HP coming soon...11/1/05 for any frequent travelers. Nothing ground breaking here....just a change from the infamous chicken caesar sald and apple cobbler.

AirTran has gone cashless. I think they use a device similar to what US uses for duty free.

[How about not selling any of that stuff at all? It doesnt go a long way to show seemless levels of service. Coming from a European flight to the USA, with complementary meals, then transferring to a cross country flight and having to pay for meals. Doesnt look very good.

No it doesn't look very good, but it's the reality of todays world in aviation. Some carriers still offer complimentary meals but I wonder how much longer that will continue. People have adjusted quite well. When you gave it to them for free, they complained about and a lot of food went to waste.

Ya know, since they have the aircraft staffed to the absolute minimum they have over time added service back. Now for the $5.00 and $7.00 snacks they are not going to include a change fund to start with. Though it can be done, it's a pain in the rear end. When the announced the single snack items that just did it for me. Working PHL - LAS the 757 became the 711. Doing all that crap and people STILL complaining about having to pay. I had a woman complain about it who I will add was from somewhere from Europe. She said that she had a meal included in her 1.5 hour on Lufthansa. I said that MOST airines charge for meals and that when 911 happened it happened in America and not in Europe. It ruined everything that we once held sacred. I don't mind offering a nice service to the customer but there should be an easier way to do this. Then on top of it all your not really ALLOWED to eat any extra meals? Yeah, if I'm pushing this slop then rest assured I shall eat one if left over. We work hard and most of us do our jobs WELL! ! I don't wanna be put in a damn pool and "possibly" get a little reward for working our butts off selling sandwiches and salads. OK, let me tell you all how I really feel.... LOL  PS. They want Pringles and Beef Jerkey? BRING IT.

I still say take a page from CO. They have great service and meals that you have to pay for and they are making money. With all the cost cuts US has gained, how can they not duplicate the CO model in inflight service? Still seems US is trying to find its place in the airline world. What is the longterm plan for inflight service levels?

HA has gone cashless too. It doesnt seem like that big of a deal, I dont know why we dont atleast try it. There are companies out there with the hardware and software to allow us to test it for a nominal fee before we purchase/or not purchase it.

It IS sad to watch our flight attendants push the swill and single item packs. In the sixties they were referred to as cocktail waitress in the sky, in the 70's and d80's waitresses in the sky....and now....a 711 clerk in the sky? Can I have a Slurpee with my pringles please?

Pitiful, just pitiful.....I am happy to see the single items go!

Cashless would be the way to go. Especially on transatlantic, were we collect hundreds of dollars each leg.

I think you meant .. CO has meals that you do NOT have to pay for ...

I think their coach meal service is ideal (salad-- healthy, plus a hot sandwich to fill you up). Ideal for a busy traveler who doesn't have the time to wander terminals looking for food. However, I don't see any evidence that CO is marketing this to their advantage, especially in their spoke cities. Unless they can get some marketing advantage (and therefore price premium) I think they'll inevitably go BOB.

I did notice that CO has cut way back on some of its first class cabins though -- just 6 seats now on the 735s

thanks for the correction 🙂 and they market it on every video equipped flight and in their inflight magazine and in the IAH hub that i know of. on every video equipped flight they make it a point to let you know that unlike they other carriers you will get a complimentary meal onboard CO.
