Anybody in this business that thinks wearing a tie is important to be a professional is why LCC is where it is. The customers don't care what you wear, or even how experienced you are. They only want CHEAP!
Loooking cheap, being cheap, and having low fares are three different things. Alot of people dont want to be cheap or even appear so. Some people just are, its how they feel about themselves in general.
Lower the fares, thats what they want. Not wearing a tie doesnt make you an LCC, nor does wearing one make you stuffy.
The current shirt looks awful without a tie, it wasn't made for that. It just looks unkempt, like we either dont care or are trying tragically to be something we're not.
Trying to get a senior workforce used to seeing itself as a major to act like a halfhearted, behind-the-times budget airline is not not going to work. They serve business markets and should act businesslike. Not over the top amenities, just consistent and businesslike.
"Wow, US Airways has a crappy paintjob that look like a Photoshop job, the planes are dirty and those wacky employees dont wear ties! They are so laid back and cool, such a low cost carrier!" Like I said, acting cheap or relaxed doesnt make the fares any more rational and it certainly doesnt attract business... in fact it drives it away in the markets they serve (at least in the East).
