I think we should take a moment and think about the great calamity that could have transpired today...and be thankful.

Question is...what will happen now?

What effect will this have on travel? If not for the fearful passengers that may become paranoid and choose not to fly, what about the stringent security guidelines that will (at least in the short-term) make it more difficult to travel? Are we looking at an airline downturn that mirrors the 9/11 aftermath once again?

Your thoughts please...

I feel sorry for the children of this country that will grow up with these threats off and on again. Like I said in a previous post...keeping costs in check with LCC is the only way for long term survival with these things happening, at least this one has thwarted..for now.

There are some folks selling business jets that are getting religion right now. Yet another nail in the coffin for our business.

I fear what all that checked luggage is going to do to the system. We couldn't deliver on that front yesterday.

Let's see how our multi-millionaire management pukes handle this. Time to actually earn those bonuses.

My gut feeling, I don't think this event will have much impact on the US doestic airline industry. The plotters were caught before anything happened. There are no pictures on the TV news of buring aircraft and dead bodies to scare the daylights out of potential airline passengers. Counter-terrorism has worked.

But I will continue by saying, when events like this happen, I believe airlines with a large/strong regional/commuter operation (US Airways Express)have a marketing advantage over airlines like Southwest/jetBlue. In Salisbury, for example, I saw the airport manager interviewed on local TV reminding passengers that, during any given hour, TSA has much fewer passengers to screen at SBY than say BWI or PHL and once you pass through security at SBY you enter PHL on the secured side of PHL. With the exception of some weather related delays all flights from SBY have operated on time with little security interuptions. I'd expect this is the same at other much smaller non-hub airports.

Consider what the TSA is advising passengers to do before arriving at the big airports. Arrive 2-hours early, which means if your driving from SBY to BWI to fly Southwest you need to leave your home in SBY 6 hours prior to departure time (a true 3-hour drive when considering any potential traffic probelms between SBY and BWI, time to park your vehcile in remote parking and take the bus to the terminal, and the requirement to arrive at the airline's ticket counter 2-hours prior to departure). Most of that travel time can be eliminated by arriving at the SBY 1-hour prior to departure and connecting through PHL and/or CLT.

Yes, I expect to hear replies about the awful baggage connections at PHL.

Nothing will change because nothing really happened. The only thing this acheived was keeping pax's away from planes and keeping people scared. Of course, since this happened, no one is talking about our failures in Iraq, North Korea developing nuclear weapons, and the melt down in the middle east ....

Ya know what though....the attitudes of many flying today NEED to be scared. Americans like to sweep $h1T under the carpet and forget. All too painfull to think about and deal with. WELLL it's here and NOT going away. For a few days my prediction will be some occasional f/a and pilot with woofin hair and breath to knock you over with. LOL

CNN just reported that security experts are recommending a ban on any item in the passenger cabin which requires a battery, since bombs require a power source.

So laptops, cellphones, ipods & wristwatches will be prohibited as carry-on luggage.

Can you even begin to imagine the uproar when these rules are enacted?

(on the flipside, maybe now all that overhead bin space can be sold as "lay-flat economy business class")

Since the plot never actually took place, I don't think travel will be affected all that long. But it will give Bush another excuse to institute security provisions that won't do a damn thing to make flying safer . .and more of an excuse to invade the privacy of citizens.

AND the pipeline in Alaska that is failing... causing gas prices to rise even higher despite the fact that most of the oil generated from it is going into reserves for the US and to China! Don't freak when gas prices hit $4 a gallon...billion's in profit were not enough...they can shoot for trillions!!!
