AmWest union is aiming to oust head
A recall drive is under way to remove the new president of America West Airlines' flight attendants union, with organizers alleging unethical behavior and poor leadership.
The effort to oust Bill Lehman comes just weeks before the airline is due to merge with US Airways, an uncertain time for workers as they worry about job security, benefits and other issues. Already, there is a deep divide between flight attendants at each airline over seniority because US Airways has been around decades longer than America West. America West executives have said a smooth workforce integration is critical to the success of the merger.
The organizers of the recall have set up a Web site, www.union-ethics.com, to rally support. The motto of the site is "For Flight Attendants, by Flight Attendants. It's about our future." The airline has 2,700 flight attendants.
