The View From A Scab Who Left!

I agree that the mechanics who didn't vote gave up their right to complain. If it was the landslide you say it was, why isn't AMFA releasing the actual number of how many voted?

I'm sure some locals probably did vote close to 100%, but one local doesn't always represent an accurate benchmark of the bigger picture, much like you can't predict a presidential election based on 50% or even 80% of all precincts reporting.

92% of 55% eligible isn't nearly the same mandate as 92% of 90% eligible.

Are you saying that the actual number of AMT's who voted to authorize the strike are not the majority of actual AMT's?

It could be because no one has asked. Rumor is they're a little busy right now, but I'm sure if you drop them an e-mail they'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I'm sure some locals probably did vote close to 100%, but one local doesn't always represent an accurate benchmark of the bigger picture, much like you can't predict a presidential election based on 50% or even 80% of all precincts reporting.

Which would be an excellent point if the voting was done at the local level, which it wasn't. It was a national referendum conducted via phone and internet as allowed by the LMRDA and the AMFA constitution, with each member given a unique identifier and the votes tallied in the presence of elected election observers.

My earlier reference to the election observers report of "nearly 100%" at my local meeting wasn't for a local, it was national. While it may be difficult to get some people to vote on even important issues, historically strike votes at NWA generate the highest turnout.

92% of 55% eligible isn't nearly the same mandate as 92% of 90% eligible.

92% of 99% eligible certainly is, but I'm growing certain that even this will not satisfy you. If you really wish to see the outcome of the strike vote, judge it by the number who have crossed - two.

I'm not surprised, I was in MSP for training when UAL filed for bankruptcy and it only made the third page of the Star Tribune business section under "Business Briefs"

i am interested in knowing what has been the relationship between NWA and AMFA.?has it been cordial or antagonistic?

When AMFA was certified, most mechanics saw it as a chance to leave behind 50 years of bad labor relations; NWA saw it as a chance to take advantage of those they perceived as inexperienced. It was only after AMFA had whipped them in court, (when NWA tried to sue over an alleged work slowdown that AMFA proved was actually of NWA's own making), and whipped them in front of the PEB, (to the point that they came back with a better offer out of fear of the PEB's recommendation), that NWA took AMFA seriously.

Every action NWA has taken since the summer of 2001, before the 9/11 attacks, has clearly been calculated to bring us to the point we are now, so I would say that "antagonistic" would be an understatement. The fact that they were preparing for the strike 10 months before negotiations even began confirms that.

just curious if there is some type vendetta against AMFA.

No more so than the other employees; we're just first. Look at what NWA is demanding from the other work groups, like the flight attendants.

Even in good times, NWA is not a very nice place to work. Some think that the best revenge the strikers could have on the scabs is if NWA were to offer permanent employment to the scabs. Once the crisis had passed and NWA no longer had to treat them as well as they are now, I guarantee that the scabs would be unionized within five years.

NWA/AMT:thank you for your detailed information.
good luck in the continuing crisis.... 😉
