When I get displaced I am going to apply for food stamps. I am making more now because of ETB, but, when I get displaced, I wont be able to fly on off days anymore. I will want to be home on those days. So, I will need the food stamps to eat. Sad..but true. 🙁

IF you decide to leave US please consider Continental. They have the type of program and service that many of the "soon to be displaced" were oringinally trained for and enjoyed. You would probably feel more at home there because of your professional background. EWR is doable.

Getting the 787, has the 777, best airline to work for, 83 hours guarantee, great "on board" culture, even great uniforms and in the merger possibilities......a sleeping giant.

Classy stable airlines still exist and you deserve to be in a classy situation, not a food stamp line.

Take a ZED or ID 90 jaunt somewhere on CO and observe. Then think it over.

I agree! Run, children.. run like the wind... EMBFA, you lead the way.....enough of the food stamps and displacements.

Classy and stable? That's debatable. I remember CAL in the 90s..

Exactly. USAir was classy a few years ago. This industry is cyclical; nobody will remember this 10 years from now.... They add FC, they take away FC. They add hot meals, they take away hot meals. People dress up to travel, people wear tank tops and flip flops to travel. People expect a hot meal and actually pay a premium for it, people want $199 coast to coast and are not willing to pay for that meal. Back and forth we go. On and on.....

The question is, however, will the New USAirways be around to enjoy its next upswing? I say, it is always a good idea to have a healthy Plan 'B', folks. 😉

Are you joking?? LOL - I dont think CAL is that stable, If you want to work for an airline that has alot of outsourced f/as in guam and central and s.a. for air mic and copa then run children run... But I wouldn't say that business first spells CLASS to ASIA - compared to UAL or AA first class suite, DAL CAL AND US is a 2 class airline... and out of EWR and IAH you have ALOT of trash. At CAL they are also thinking about turning their pensions over to the IAM, so be very cautious of your choice.. As was said earlier, the industry is cyclical and it will be hard for CAL and AA to compete with all the airlines that have slashed costs in BK. CAL is the highest paid airline though for f/as, at the current, on the next downturn it will be ugly over there, and lets not forget much like USAir they cant file for bk again. Also do alot of research - if you look at the last quarter, CAL, would have posted a loss if they would not have sold many shares of COPA to keep their head above water. Also you will be stuck on the 757 to Europe, GAG, ahh the things to think about.... Also their work rules are horrible, my good friend works there on the domestic side, and he was horribly sick b/c of the amount they worked him, and the time off in between trips is minimal - VERY MINImal... choose wisely my friends.... and if you are smart you will not choose an airline at all.

The CAL IAM represented FAs are the highest paid in the industry. They have the old CAL Pension and now have the IAM pension plan which is independant of the IAM, it is run by IAM Trustees and Management Trustees, it is a mulit-employer plan so if CAL decides to terminate a pension yours will still be there.

I was involved in FAs last CBA in IAH and there CBA is far superior then others and actually treat their employees with respect.

The VP of Inflight overheard me saying I could not get on a US flight back to CLT from negotiations till late evening and came over and gave me a Positive Space on CAL so I get could back home to my son earlier after spending 8 straight days in IAH at their negotiations.

They offer a far superior product than US and even have free meals still in coach.

And there is nothing in the law that prevents US or CO from filing bankruptcy again, better get your facts straight.

Guess you did not see US is flying 757s to Europe now also.

Oh girl, don't mess with Mrs. DoubtFlier! Not only will she steal your Manolos and leave with a pair of Easy Spirit Sensibles for your UAL or AA interview but, she'll also raid your pre-interview trail mix and leave you with nothing but peanuts! Everything But The Girl stole the word "fierce" from her!

Well United is hiring 1700 next year in addition to the 1400 they hired this year despite no new aircraft. Thats, what, almost our whole janky airlines worth of F/As. Continental and Northwest are hiring too for anyone who still wants to do this but work for a real airline. Guess those airlines know how to staff and utilize thier employees. Starting over would suck but I guess we all just made the mistake of taking a chance with US three times.
As the news settles in more I'm more and more disheartened.
🙁

sky high states: I'm just short of 30 years. EMBFA. Trust me on this one, it's been this way for decades. Cycles of prosperity and then cycles of bankruptcies and concessions. Strikes, and labor disputes. Back in the day, Pan Am and TWA were the places to be. International travel, great layovers all over the world. My Pan Am commuters used to poke fun at me and my "domestic" trips. I didnt care, though I was abit jealous of their travels. I used to justify it by thinking I work for a great company, who pays me well. Pan Am is gone, TWA is gone, and so are the good paying jobs in this industry. What's keeping us here? Longevity, for some. The Life style is hard to give up. In reality, it's a crap shot. Who knows which carrier will endure the next DOWN TURN and who will NOT.
Deciding to stay or leave is tough. I think it basically comes down to "WHAT YOU CAN PUT UP WITH". and, if your spirit dies 8 hours each day while at work.........then it's time to move on.

I hope it works out for you.

Regarding the commute from PIT to PHL, I've run into more than one F/A who have said that SKED has given them positve space to get to work.
Has anyone else heard of this? What circumstances does this occur under?

When scheduling needs you and they have NO other options left. They will try to throw that bone to you. Just a tool to cover up for bad planning and poor coverage on thier part.

Yes 700uw you are correct they are the highest paid, however don't kid yourself, when the downturn hits again and you think the highest paid will remain so, that is foolish to say the least, unless you are the most profitable ala SWA... and if a merger hits there goes the pensions as well, the IAM pension is not as nearly as generous as the CAL pension which goes by the last 5 years of employment and work, trust me when the senior ones at CAL don't want the bs pension that the IAM is pushing... CAL is a decent airline - but definitely wouldnt be my choice... thats all.. I have relatives retired from 40 years of service there and you can serve meals in coach all you want - but why? when everyone else charges, that is dumb.... people dont purchase a ticket b/c it has a free ball of grease on it, they buy it b/c it is the cheapest... plain and simple... Of course i know US flys the 757 to europe - but luckily i dont have to be on it b/c i work for UAL who only flys 3 class widebodies international... but i do think it is smart to do in thinly served markets, it is a good decision in my eyes.

It's stupid to go to a major airline now anyway, anyone who didn't start more than five years ago is just furlough fodder for the next set of mergers.

Received my official letter for possible displacement. "I regret to inform you......BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!!! " I am somewhere inbetween 50 to 80 from the bottom in PHL...so I am praying it misses me. The possible displacement goes back to Nov 8th class of 99 for PHL.
Keep in mind this post does not have exact numbers---just estimates from what I remember

I am confused here and I don't remember the original numbers but didn't the company in the first CBS about transfers state that they needed around 183 to transfer to PHL ?
Then I think they actually had around 80-90 actually choose to transfer, right ??? So where in the h#ll are they getting 70 from PIT to be displaced and 140 from CLT ? That's 210 people they are uprooting w/o taking in to consideration the 80 or so that are going voluntarily....which when I add it up, equals 290 people.
Can anyone help me out here and explain how approx. 180 they needed originally has now turned into 290??? I know the PIT and CLT displacements will bump people out of bases and a bunch transferred out of DCA so people will be moving around a lot but the numbers the company gave us are WAY too high...Do you get what I'm asking ???

I thought it was 130 needed in PHL. There are about 210 officially to be displaced out of Pit and Clt. I think somewhere around 85 had transfered to Phl to make that number go to about 45 or so needed for June 1st. So, yes..I do think they did go to high with the numbers. I dont know how all those Pit people are gonna commute to Phl. Its already tough..now they just added over 100 more to the processes. Good luck! I will be driving to DC. If thats where I get to go.
