DISPLACEMENTS FROM PITTSBURGH

Thanks for supporting my position and this has been discussed by MANY. Just as the Company embarks on another TDY of PIT Reserves to LGA....it will be another waste of money that can be eliminated. TDYs were implemented in Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr/May &Dec in 2005 to LGA and now for FEB 2006......what does that tell YOU? No one wants to go there or shall we say STAY there (ask the May recalls). The East is severly overstaffed and why are they sending people to SIT TDY in New York City when the same trips could be covered IF (and that is the K-E-Y word) scheduling had their act together and covered the trips from FUTURE as an Out of Base Trip. The money may be good for those few doing the TDY but we all pay the price. <TIME in LGA needs to be REDUCED, once and for ALL> <_<

Honestly, I don't understand. Is there anyone from scheduling that may come up with at least a half cocked excuse as to why we do the TDY from PIT and not from future as an "out of base trip". It drives me nuts. Here we sit on our rears in PHL and to an extent CLT yet they send people to do TDY and get paid all that money. Make the trips "out of base" from future for the PIT reserves even. Oh I tell ya......Uggggg.

The ONLY reason I can think of as to why they don't do them as out of base trips is due the fact that the vast majority of their trips begin at the crack of dawn and finish on the last day late. That is why very few commute to LGA or BOS. I did TDY out of PIT to BOS in 2002 for a few months. The trips absolutely blew.

Calling it idiotic would almost be a compliment to the Director of Schdlg. There are PLENTY of available flights to get crew in position for even the early morning departures, an RON at the end of a trip can pose a problem. WHY they insist on sending a "small infantry of Reserves" up for TDY defies logic and sound financial sense. TDYs cost thousands of dollars to block rooms for a monthly period, not to mention continuous running per diem. There is no reason to overstaff for "what If?"

All of January scheduling heard complaints from f/a's who were assigned LGA pairings about why TDY was not offered for this month. Scheduling has its act together every day. LGA trips are always covered the day prior by future scheduling. The problem is when reserve coverage is complete, many of the trips left over have very early report times. The only way to get them covered is to send a PIT or CLT f/a up to overnight that night, thereby forcing the trip to be covered by daily, and often making it a quick call.

This also leaves the issue of daily coverage for LGA. Not all trips are covered from future. What about a overnight sick call? Or a stuck commuting? What if there is no time to get anybody in from out of base? We try to alleviate this problem by assigning OPR duty top out of base reserves. Let me tell you how popular those trips are with the CLT and PIT f/a's. TDY's help with this issue, though at a cost to the company.

Astro, Pro .... what is your solution on how these trips should be covered? 2 days out? Not contractual. Rebundle them before they have been offered to LGA lineholders and reserves? Not contractual. Alter the departing times? Not possible. The contract specifies a method for covering a short base: TDY.

The real problem is as you state: Nobody wants to stay in LGA, even recalls. When displacements occur, the staffing issue will be resolved exactly as long as the amount of time before the next VFLR or other leave/separation program. Then we start all over again, as the LGA f/a's jump on the opportunity.

I don't have a solution for this, at least not one that I have the authorization to implement.

Oh, and I deny being employed by USAirways.

Not being an employee myself  (remember I crochet G-strings for the Chippendales)I can understand the problems that the schedulers are faced to deal with. Many reserves have told me the problems in LGA began to surface when the base shifted from being a True Shuttle operation to incorporating Mainline (non Shuttle) flying within the domicile. Shuttle people tell Me they want 1day Shuttle trips yet all of a sudden NOW they all want the multi-day trips. US will NEVER be a major player in the metro NY area (and don't fool yourself), destinations are limited and Florida flying has pretty much been eliminated ....once the Company decides what they want to do in NY (largest air market in the world) and stop treading water then they can address the situation.

Boy you guys must overhear a lot of FA's talking in the jumpseats while you are sitting in FC as pax--remember, employees can't post here.

This was discussed here before. Trips originate and terminate in NYC to REDUCE crew layover expenses. Sending dozens of crewmembers to LAYOVER in downtown NYC is probably MORE EXPENSIVE then sending TDY "F/A's" to cover trips.

The ANSWER to this thread, A SATELLITE BASE for PITTSBURGH flight attendants.
TEMPE needs to develope a CORPORATE CULTURE to "ACCOMODATE" a group of individuals who have stepped up to the plate, and saved this airline through GIVE BACKS. There's still a BANK of flights that END IN PIT. EVERYNIGHT........THEY SHOULD BE PITTSBURGHERS, FLIGHT ATTENDANTS who can go HOME. (MINUS THE PER DIEM)
