I passed for the most recent recall to Boston. Talked with my old rommate who went back. She said she is now making 18.75/hr. Is this true? Did even the poor people on B scale have a pay cut. I am glad I didnt go back now, I need to save some money for when/if I decide to return at the next recall. (she said they are having another recall in the fall) Does anyone know if this is realy true--she hasnt gotten her first paycheck yet but this is what she was told by another f/a who went back to LGA the recall before this one. What is going on? and how much is per diem now? My friend says things arent the same and seems disappointed with things.

atlantis- Sorry to say yes it's true. It's been said more times than I can count on here this is NOT the same airline you left. It's not pretty and if you were 0-5 years I believe you were "red circled" meaning your hourly rate did not change. That being said you never accrue longevity for pay purposes or vacation on furlough. The only thing you accrue is seniority for bidding purposes. Before anyone makes any decision I would suggest reading the contract as it will answer all those question and spells out most everything you could think of asking.

We were "red-circled" the first concessionary contract. All bets were off for the second concessionary contract and even the lowest paid employees took pay cuts. Hence, you come back at almost $2.00 LESS per hour than you made back in 2000/2001 while cost of living has gone up, your wages have decreased.

You are making about $9.00/hr after calculating duty time at work and the f/a way of getting paid. Add the junior bases of LGA, BOS and you will have to live with several other people OR work the extra job OR give up most of your days off to work ETB (electronic trade board) trips.
Per diem is $1.90/hr. Most people bring food these days.

It's a different world now. Only come back with your eyes WIDE open.

Even with recalls NOTHING changes. You will move up a few numbers but it's like stacking bricks and morter bricks and morter. The f/a reserve and blockholder system is broken. Just keep layering it on. If I were out and wanted to come back I'd SERIOUSLY do my research and find out just what the game is now. It's BAD and I don't care WHO tries to tell you otherwise. Bad to some though is livable to others. It's the standards you have set in life though. Good luck to those that eventually do come back and we'd love to have you.

That's one of the reasons 38 out of the 90 recalled for July 1st quit. Things are grossly different now. We clean planes and if you are on duty, just as soon as you are legal you get called out again. You have to cover out of base trips that they dead head you all over for---with 1/2 pay no credit for the DH. In addition trips no longer have a 5 hour minimum day----we have a 3 day for tomorrow that is split and pays 11+ hours....who wants to do that ?

All because "Crew Resource Planning" in Tempe doesn't have a clue how to base balance.

Then again, with the B/H and RSV system "broken" as someone put it----the way it is, I don't know if they could base balance. The current problem now is that they hardly awarded VAC to F/As/RSVs over the summer who always used to hold it....so they just call in SCK.

Add in the storms and those who could not commute in to their base and it's a RSVs worst nightmare. I just got home and my uniform is already in the wash.....if you have a job that pays you over 20K a year and you sleep in your own bed every night I would stay away.

Very true. The system in place SUCKS pure and simple. Being a BH has many restrictions that really serve no purpose (weekends/holidays etc.) But the Reserve System is an absolute JOKE..........talk about endentured slaves. Absolute horrible way to treat your employees.....and I don't blame the ones who find ways to abuse it (Tit-for-Tat). Until Crew Planning can get their act together and DETERMINE what they need to achieve (doubtful) and enable PKinsey (a lousy F/A when HE was online) to DETERMINE Manpower W-H-E-R-E it needs to be, NOTHING WILL CHANGE. And they wonder WHY people do what they DO!

Okay, the story gets worse. My friend said they did a BOS to Aruba trip and then turned around and came back. She was all alone in a full first class and she said all the people were mad saying they would never fly usair again.

Anyway, in dca she said there were no gate agents to be found and all of the pssgrs were coming up to the crew asking for help. then a lady psgr got ahold of the microphone and started yelling 'someone please come over to gate so and so to help us!"

My friend said it was embarssing to be an emplyee and she couldnt believe she had come back to this type of mess. what is going on? why arent there gate agents in dca or did they quit or what?

is this what is going on now?

The 5 hour min day (average) still exists, but generally not for split trips that a reserve splits on to. However a published trip that has a dh in it does pay 5 hrs avg per day. You just have to claim it. Everyone avoids those published trips that onlly show 12+ hrs for a 3 day or 17+ for a 4 day, but those have dh in them and really do pay 15 or 20 hours, sometimes more, if there is 1/3.5 in them.

This is due to a grievance won by ALPA quite awile back, that also is good for the f/a's. The returning furloughees, both pilot and f/a don't know about this and don't know how to claim it. It's a real shame that the union didn't do a good job of informing them of this. They say that 80% of the pilots don't claim this pay, so I would imagine it's 95% of the f/a's that don't either. Find someone who knows how to do it, to show you how to claim it.

Omar Bryant in the PHL AFA office is happy to show you how to claim it, regardless of where you are based. She has sat in the crew room trying to pull F/As aside and show them. She is extremely well informed and knowlegable about the reserve system and always available, I would go so far to say that she is the best resource the US Airways reserves have, and hopefully the most valuable resource in negotiations.

I have talked to Omar on the phone and she helped me w/ some issues. She also gave me wrong advice on some other issues. While I believe she means well, she interprets the contract in black and white and it needs to be interpreted from ALL sections related to the issue which she didn't do. From what I understand, she has been banned from calling scheduling on behalf of the PHL F/As---at least that's what someone in the LEC PHL office told me. Too bad, she's a fighter...hope she sticks around and keeps fighting for us.

wow after reading all of this stuff on here it doesnt sound too promising to return. I guess the question I should ask is this: if you were on furlough and got a recall would you take it knowing what you know?

thanks for any help or advice

Well, I can tell you that I voluntarily resigned in December 2004 to take a job at ALPA. I seriously regret leaving US because, no matter how crappy US is, being a flight attendant is still a kick a$$ job (if you really do enjoy flying, traveling, and the lifestyle). Sounds like you don't have much seniority, so if you really want to continue in the industry, why not look elsewhere? UAL, CAL, NWA (maybe as bad as US, though), and SWA are all actively hiring. I think the starting pay is pretty even across the board (give or take a dollar), but research some of the contracts and make a good decision. Oooh, and there is Virgin America -- that would be sassy. 🙂 Good luck, and remember this -- people love to complain, but if they really hated is as much as they claim to, they would quit.

Everyone has their own reasons for returning or not.

Like the pilot on this board (another topic) who made the decision to leave, you have to do pros and cons.
Even though the job has eroded terribly and the tools we are accustomed to working with are long gone, I personally love the scheduling flexibility. That is a huge plus. I do the best I can within the limits imposed on me.
If you enjoy being a problem solver and apologist, come on back!
