Route updates for CLE

dfw79,

Do you know whether the ELM service will also be AIR-21 funded? Commutair doesn't currently serve ELM.

I was unable to locate any dockets filed by Elmira for AIR-21 funding. So I would guess no.

Running Commutair flights through CLE makes so much sense; I've been surprised they didn't do it sooner - after the LGA service failed.

How is CO getting around the pilots contract to use COconnection carriers from CLE? I thought non CO or COEX flying from hubs was specifically banned?

The ban applies only to jets; turboprops are exempt from the agreement.

That explains it. Thanks!

As a couple people predicted, Commutair flights from CLE are in CAL's latest e-schedule. Does anybody know if this is all new flying for Commutair or are they taking down flights elsewhere in their system?

Also CLE-Charleston WV will go from ERJ's to the Beeches.

Any idea what other new routes will be flown with the Beeches? The timetable shows that CLE-LGW will run next winter, is this just not in the schedual yet? Is it because of low loads? How have the loads been to LGW this winter?

Sorry for all the ?'s

The CLE-LGW is still in the schedule for the winter, however the Cleveland Plain Dealer announced it would not operate during the winter months due to low bookings. CAL could still fly this route though.
As far as Commute air we are supposed to get as many as 50 flights per day, new cities expected are,Pit,Tol,Yng,Fwa,Lan and some others.

The PD gave Rahsaad Johnson of Continental as their source for the CLE-LGW story. The action Mr. Johnson described is no doubt under consideration by CAL, but next winter's schedules aren't locked yet. Things can change especially if CAL can improve the feed to CLE.

Northwest crews in TOL have been told May 2nd for the CO restart here. Anyone else confirm? Also ATA Connection will be moving from their current gate to the other side of the airport here. THey are currently in Gate 5. Northwest uses their new jetbridge at Gate 4 and has secured a deal for 2 gates here in TOL - more than likely this would mean they would have 4 & 5 and run CO out of 5.

Nonstop to London won't fly next winter

Forget about flying from Cleveland to London next winter unless you're willing to catch a connecting flight.

Continental Airlines said yesterday that it will halt its nonstop flight from Cleveland to London's Gatwick Airport in late October and shelve it until the spring of 2004

Civic leaders have championed the only trans-Atlantic flight from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport as vital to the region's image and economy.

But the airline says the demand just isn't there during the winter - even when it was cut back to five days a week this season.

"We've been losing money," Continental spokesman Rahsaan Johnson said yesterday.

Continental began offering the daily nonstop flight to London in 1999. It suspended the flight after international air travel plunged following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but the airline restarted it in April of last year.

The route was profitable over the summer, but Continental cut the Tuesday and Wednesday departures from Cleveland last October in anticipation of a slower winter travel season.

"We did better than we expected in the summer of 2002, but unfortunately the cost to operate the service is greater than the revenue we're getting during the off-season," Johnson said.

The airline plans to resume seven-day service at the beginning of next month and expects to continue it through the summer, Johnson said.

The Boeing 757 that flies the route can carry about 170 passengers, including 16 in first class.

City officials said that in light of the air travel slump caused by the terrorist attacks and a poor economy, they were not surprised Continental decided to suspend the flight during the winter.

John Mok, Cleveland's airports director, said the city remains committed to the flight.

"We're willing to work with Continental to help them to re-establish the service when it is economically viable for them to do so," he said.
