Hummm....maybe APFA flight attendants should be cohesive in demanding Recalls of the furloughed flight attendants(TWA)to provide some 'move up' within the system. Speak OUT!
Sadly, it appears Recalls are not a priority at APFA or AA.
My prediction is that AA f/a's will work long, hard & understaffed until 2008.
No Recall, No Move up, Nada.
Whose GRASS is GREENER??? Those without a job or those with a job on Reserve? Go Figure!
*****************************************
You are blessed that you have a job as opposed to the 4500 TWA flight attendants(with 15-45 yrs of service) who are unemployed & without health insurance or any benefits at all.

Happy Holidays.

If any of them are still unemployed...it's by choice.

What the heck are you talking about? Your post makes no sense. Have you been hitting the wine? Besides, we only call in sick when we are truly sick silly. Everyone knows that.

Happy Holidays to all. This is the one time of year I don't miss flying. My new job "shuts down" (paid) from right before Christmas to after the New Year. No pager, no trip extensions, no more having Christmas on whatever day I can be home (or shipping little ones off to relatives so we could have our time together at a later date).

Please be mindful that there are many who would gladly fly your Christmas, weekend, all nighter, 10 leg a day trip, while commuting and being on reserve. It is hard to believe that so many still miss the airline lifestyle, and even though it will never "be the same", would give just about anything for the opportunity to fly again.

Holiday staffing has been a challenge since the beginning of commercial flight, and will probably be no different this year or years to come. There will be those that fly ill because they don't want to call off, those that aren't sick that do call off, and those that fly with the sick ones, catch what they have and wind up having to cover the trips of the ones calling off because of a feeling of entitlement. Such is life. Make the best of your situation and when all else fails, be very thankful that you still have that job to b***h about during the holidays.

Just curious, HOW bad did the "flu bug" hit, over the t/giving holiday period ????

Also, as I'm sure you F/A's know(considering ALL the sick passengers you must encounter, in the "aluminum tube in the sky"), that the FLU is running rampant.

Try Zi-Cam at first sign of symptoms. Is that does'nt help, WELL.....you "KNOW what to do"

("It" seems to abate around the 2/3rd of January)

NH/BB's

Both me and my neighbor were out for 3 trips begining of last month. Me with the flu and her with a strain. Both of were good to go for Thanksgiving and had a nice turkey and ham dinner at the hotel.

Didnt notice large number of people out. Reserves I knew had lots of extra time off.

I was pleasantly surprised. Aside from some WX issues, it was very quiet. It was a nice change from previous years.

Not necessarity true, MJK.
I dont know your age or life experience but I will inform you that the job market/benefits available to those seeking new employment, whose resumes read 20-40 years in aviation, furloughed, are truly grim. Company will hire 2 - 20 year olds in lieu of one 45-55 year old. Health Benefits are not part of the benefit package these days-if you have to pay out of pocket, it is a hefty premium to pay-esp if you are older and have kids.
Re: former TWers who were furloughed, to start a new career at age 45-60 was not 'a choice', it was forced/instilled by AA and APFA. If AA/APFA excuse is 9/11 , then explain to me why CO, DELTA, and USAir have all recalled their furloughees.
There are many former TWA flight attendants who would accept recall if given the opportunity. It is unfortunate that APFA members do not scream to APFA/AA for Recalls. Not only would AA flight attendants gain a cushion in moving off Reserve but may find some seasoned negotiating talent for the 2008 contract. Of course, this is up to you, as APFA members, to make your voice heard if you agree. Please try to climb out of the apathy that has plagued your Union and get over the Fear Factor of TWA recalls.

I say , as a former TWer, 30 years service, furloughed since Nov 2001, whether recalled or not, I will always care about the flight attendant career-it is not the job it used to be nor will it ever return to the "glory days"-those days are long gone.

"UNITY" is a concept lacking at APFA and until you understand what that means, AA will always have you by the throat. Stamina? You may have what it takes to stay with the job day to day...but how much will you take over time before you say "Enough, ALREADY!"

I know my simple post is not going to make a difference but I think it holds some truth and a key to your success or demise.
Good Luck.

Amen, Riptide. I understand that there are a few base chairs at APFA who keep pushing for recalls, especially since it would be a win-win situation for all. Recalls would benefit today's active flight attendant, as well, through renewed transfer activity; lowered reserve seniority; increased leave time.

Reserve keeps creeping up at all bases, and there is little-to-no movement through the system. I think each of us, when denied leave time, PVDs, or transfers, need to protest directly to the company, as well. I know I have. I certainly am not trying to appear selfish, as I know I am lucky to be still employed, but I, too, would like the chance of a PVD, now and then, and if we bring back recalls, I MAY get my PVD AND somebody who dearly wants (and perhaps, NEEDS) this job can come back to a career they love. It would ultimately benefit all of us.

I know there are financial considerations, but certainly, something could be figured out if the powers-that-be at the top were to really put their heads together.

I have contacted and spoken to numerous APFA reps, both on the ground and on flights. Many are willing to listen, but as far as those on the board of directors, of the ones I have spoken to, the only ones that seem to "get it" and have been pushing for relief are the LAX and LGA chairs. I am sure there are others who see the need for recalls, but how far can they get without both a majority of the board of directors agreeing, AND getting Tommie Hutto Blake to push the company to a resolution of this terrible situation.

Without a doubt, your post is one of the most reasonable posts on this subject that I have read. You are well informed.

1 down, 18,000 to go. Hope springs eternal.

I wouldn't go so far to call it a win-win. That implies that the company sees a benefit, and the only benefit you've mentioned is more time off for flight attendants... If you really believe that recalls will make for a happier workgroup, I have some swamp land in New Mexico to sell you.

I do understand the issue of transfers, and renegotiating the size of the bases can be done as a no-cost item, correct?
