Transatlantic Schedule 2010

Well I totally spaced on the Czech Republic and Slovakia splitting into 2 countries. So BITE ME! Perhaps I should have said Eastern Europe or the former Soviet Bloc nations.

Instead of breaking balls why not offer the comments Hp Early Retiree offered?

Clearly he knows a great deal about Europe. While I OTOH just know where I want to visit and his point about having a Star Partner on the other end makes a lot of sense.

I non-rev'd a lot on Czech Air, Austrian, Malev and Lufthansa all over E. Europe during the 90's. One time, while expecting a then new A-310 at JFK, up pulls a IL-62M, a bit of a shock, but I made the flight, plane was like being in an old shoe, but we made it across the pond. There are still lots of European capitals that can't support a transatlantic: Riga, Bucharest, Bratislava, Minsk, Chisinau, Skopje, Tallin, Zagreb, Sofia, Vilnius.

Maybe if given fifth freedom to do a wrap to 2 larger cities, but those places are better served by their national airlines.

Considering how difficult it was for me to obtain a visa to Belarus, I'm surprised that Minsk can support any flights at all. 🙄

And Bratislava is only about an hour's drive from VIE, so I could not see any sort of transatlantic service to BTS on any airline.

Except in the case of CSA and MALEV, they no longer fly long-haul flights to North America.

The problem with most of the cities mentioned above is that they could probably support a flight on an aircraft with the costs of a B757 yet they are beyond the range of the B757, leaving them with no/few suitable alternatives.

Well, you served up a softball, I could not resist. And, quit breaking my balls, I basically said about VIE more or less the same thing HP Early Retiree.

IMHO, airlines such as CSA (OK) and LOT and to a lesser extent Malev have come a long way from flying Tu-134s, Tu-154s, Yak-42s and IL-62s only ~20 years ago. Even more amazing is the transformation of places like PRG into the airport it is today. PRG and VIE are the best airports to transfer at for travel to eastern EU countries. WAW is nice too, but geographical location is not as good as PRG and VIE.

I think DL makes good use of OK/PRG for targeting the eastern EU market, why US has not used OS/VIE to its advantage all these years it is a part of the * alliance is beyond my comprehension. I guess there is just no business in the northeast of the country that US could capture with its position in BOS - NYC - PHL -DCA

From what I've heard, Minsk is a pretty nasty place. One note on PRG airport, last time I was there at the new terminal, they had soda machines that dispensed beer. Czech beer....mmmmm

VIE is a good option for anything in E. Europe Czech, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia as well as former Soviet states like Belarus and Moldova and even the "stans" are served from VIE. And its a pretty easy airport to navigate, not too big. I agree that PRG or BUD would not be money makers, but VIE could work.
And think it’s all possible in large part due to Lech Wałęsa
Sorry I had to

My favorite country in europe is italy. Why not naples and genoa.Dont know of any other direct service from the states.Do they have an airports that can handle international flights?Perhaps 3-4 weekly flights to test the market.Perhaps the canary islands as they are within the reach of 757's.

We flew from EWR-CDG-NAP 2 years ago on Air France. I remember seeing ads in the Naples airport for nonstop flights from JFK.

I just did a search and a carrier called Eurofly has some flights, but a very limited schedule that seems to stop at the end of this month. Their fleet includes A330-200's.

Naples is capable of handling transatlantic flights, but looking at Eurofly's schedule, there must not be a lot of demand. We would have appreciated a nonstop flight, despite excellent service in coach on AF. Our flight from EWR to CDG was delayed (typical for EWR) and we had to almost run from one terminal to the other to make our connecting flight after clearing immigration.

how many 330-200 are we going to receive in 2010 and how many 767's are going to be retired?

"Yes, all in 2010. Thats what the word is on the International Street."

What/Who is this int'l street? Is it an employee, a ramp worker, words literally on the street?

I hope you are right
