US 807 CLT-PHX-HNL today...and tomorrow

Alaska has had some diversions to Oakland this week. We were on 859 SEA-HNL yesterday. Our total time on the plane including boarding was about 10 hours. The middle of the plane didn't even get beverage service until 5 hours after takeoff. Alaska's Lihue flight also went via Oakland. The diversions also happened on Sunday.

Passengers on the US CLT-HNL flight are lucky that routing CLT-PHX-HNL is more of a straight line, with less time lost during the fuel stop. When AS goes to Oakland, it adds about 3 hours to flight time.

There is a new Passenger Bill of Rights which I believe incurs fines to an airline of up to $27,000 for chronically late flights.

The new rule incorporates some language that defines "chronically late" for being fined pretty narrowly compared to the monthly DOT report's list. The flight must be more than 30 minutes late at least half the time for at least a 4 month period. I think it was the AP that found that only 55 fliights would have been "chronically late" for purposes of the new rule last year - all of them to/from NYC airports.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the rule Dec. 21 as part of what he called President Barack Obama's "Passenger Bill of Rights." Besides cracking down on chronically late flights, The rules, which don't require congressional approval, take effect in April.
With last month's rule, the DOT created a new definition for "chronically late." Flights that operate at least 10 times a month are only chronically late if they arrive at their destination more than 30 minutes after their scheduled arrival time more than half the time. And the delays must occur for more than four straight months before the airline risks a fine.
Even if airlines have a chronically delayed flight under the new rule, there are still ways of getting around it. Airlines can fix the few flights that could violate the rule by padding their schedules — adding minutes to the scheduled length of the flights so they are logged as on-time.

That will happen more often than canceling flights because under the new rule cancellations count against airlines in the chronically delayed calculation, said travel expert Joe Brancatelli.

"You just build in extra time," said Richard Magurno, AirTran Airways' general counsel.

Go Cowboys......X3
Neither the Eagles will Win a Super Bowl or the US807 Flight will never be on-time. That is one thing US Airways has in common with the Eagles, They are both consistent, giving its customers "False Hope"!

Looks like US isnt the only carrier having problems:

AS851 SEA-HNL via OAK 1/11, 1/12
AS851 SEA-HNL via PDX 1/6
AS853 SEA-LIH via OAK 1/6, 1/10, 1/12
AS853 SEA-LIH via PDX 1/5
AS857 SEA-OGG via OAK 1/10, 1/11
AS859 SEA-HNL via OAK on 1/6 1/11, 1/12
AS859 SEA-NNL via PDX 1/5
AS861 PDX-OGG via OAK 1/10
AS865 SEA-KOA via OAK 1/11, 1/12
AS865 SEA-KOA via PDX 1/6

But US is having more problems than any other carrier flying widebodies from the east coast.

Yesterday, 12 January, US807 arrived at 15:21 vs. 15:11 scheduled time. First "on time" arrival for this flight?

By DOT Standards ( A14 ) Yes, but the flight still has NOT Arrived On-Time or Early as per Published Arrival Time, NOT ONCE !!!!!!

It is all very complicated. After the merger Tempe bought a globe so they could figure out where all of those international destinations they had never heard of were.

Upon examining the globe it was determined the CLT-HNL route was downhill westbound. Using a spreadsheet it was determined the gravity on a downhill flight would offset the jetstream, and conversely the jetstream would compensate for the uphill eastbound trip.

Please don't ask for an explanation. As I said it is very complicated.

What the hell does Alaska Airlines having diversions going up and down the west coast to and from Hawaii have to do with US Airways having diversions to PHX? It's not even remotely the same flight plan. Again, let us compare US service from CLT to Delta's from ATL. Oh wait, there IS no comparison. They don't even have brains enough to pad the flight for those that DON'T divert but still arrive late. Talk about screwing up a one car funeral.
