Usair Coming After Sick Callers

If I were in managment, I would send either 100,000 FF miles in the accounts of those who were inconveinced or 2 space postive seats to be used anytime next year.

I hate to say it, and I know I am going to get plenty of snap backs. In my opinion, everyone who called in sick from Friday morning on, should not get paid and get a drop dead letter in their file. Forget about documentation, forget about previous record or warnings. If they want to stick together and cause grief to the customers , then stick together now. Sorry for the legitamately sick people and the ones with good records, but trying to figure out who was sick and who was not, will not work.

What a dumbass statement.

That would be a start, but would not be publicized enough to matter. The public is fuming. And so are, people like me, who were impacted because of what happened. I was not traveling, but my employee was and she had to drive 17 hours causing her to not to be back to work as scheduled causing me to lose time from work. It's not just the pax who were traveling who were impacted, but their families, employers, friends, etc. etc. etc. So, instead of just one passenger being furious, you have one passenger x 10 or more people who were also affected by the passenger's misfortune.

If you notice...

Managment is asking employees to volunteer for free their time over New Years.

Why? Answer: They can't run the operation in PHL, can't staff it correctly to handle the volume of bags and traffic over holiday peak periods. Don't you guys get it yet? You're so focused on blaming the employees for the fiasco, and mangament is still not able to handle the volume in PHL.

Last year, when sick calls were the same, and NO cancellations....they had PIT operation in full force. They channeled the connections through PIT.

If you have heard by now, you will....managment is rethinking about the operation in PIT and rethinking the "focus thing".

There is more to the weekend then sick calls. Will the real truth be known????

This management can not run an airline. period.

Hate to break it to all the "fire them" supporters out there but.........
Due to the fact that we are subjected to mandatory overtime of 4 hours or more almost everyday of the year, 3/4 of the ramp in PHL has family leave. Such leave is already investigated and approved by the company. If your Dr. has already jumped through all the hoops UsAir creates to give you family leave....I'm sure he would have no problem saying you were sick on Xmas. I believe that the FMLA act protects you from action taken against you when you are out on family leave.
It's Usair's game....they make the rules... we just play by them.

That's the problem, how can you figure out how many were legitimately ill, that's why you can't fire everyone.

You can be fired even if you have a doctors note, but a emergency room bill is something else. Even so , just firing and making the majority having to go through the system ( getting the job back can take 12 to 24 months ) right up until arbitration is worth it, for ALL THE EMPLYOEES WHOM WENT TO WORK AND GOT SCREWED BY THOSE WHOM ABUSED THE SICK TIME !

Yhis is very easy to figure out. Reps will be coming to your home and counting the snotty tissues in the trash can.

The 340 were for Monday Dec. 27 alone, v.s 259 in 2003 on the same day Dec. 27.

Monday was the worst day for sick calls, however, there were absolutely no cancellations due to crews.

On Xmas eve 2004 the total sick was 238 v.s xmas eve 2003 of 261.
On Xmas day 2004 the total sick was 304 v.s. xmas day 2003 of 298.

Last year there were no cancellations due to crews for xmas 2003 holiday.

The company had downsized Pittsburgh traffic and built up PHL. I do not believe they will admit that they were not prepared for the traffic and bag transfers coming into PHL. THe sick calls for the f/as were beside the point. Weather screwed up U's operation, and they just were not prepared.

So. they blamed and gave labor the "black eye".

Now, they just made the cusotmer think that U is just plain upredictable and they won't book on us.

Good job.

Pitbull you are on the money with this post. And, this year they had to fly to bags to CLT instead of trucking them to PIT.

In regard to F/A sick call numbers, the percentage of sick calls is larger because of the lower total number of employees this year versus last year.

Pitbull, I hope your rep in pit MS xidas, has as much class as Perry, and stands up and rebukes these dead beats, instead of continueing to bash management. AFA and all unions took a huge black eye because of this, id encourage MS Teddy to be a leader, and not be just a "one" liner management basher! Take responsiblity of your own action, clean your own house, (meaning afa) before you blame someone else. Xidas unfortunatly will be representing me as well as all afa, not just whats left of pit.

For all these people holloring to fire everybody that called out sick... I have a question. They can not operate with the few employees they have, what are they going to do if they fire a whole bunch more ???

I read they were asking for "Volunteers" to help "Work" in PHL over the next few days. Please correct me if I am wrong but I didn't see the word "Free" in there.

When I read it, I took it to mean that if say you & I were scheduled to be off and had time available we would "Volunteer" to take an uncovered trip which we would subsequently be paid for.

Same on the ramp, If I had Saturday off, I come in take an extra shift and get paid.

Am I out in left field here? I read the AP thing and then a huge chunk got deleted, so I am unsure.

US Airways wants employees to work for free
DAVID B. CARUSO
Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - US Airways appealed to employees to work at Philadelphia's airport over the New Year's weekend - for free in some cases - to avoid a repeat of a Christmas fiasco that left the airline with too few workers to fly its planes and process baggage.

"This is a volunteer program. You will not be paid if this is on your day(s) off," a memo to employees said. "It promises to be a rewarding opportunity to learn more about the operation of our airline and come face to face with our customers."

Will work for Free or Food?
