Another perspective on not being a union member in a union shop is that the employee is not subject to union discipline. A union member can be fined by the union and it is legally enforceable. As an example, if the union calls a strike and a union member cross the picket line, they maybe fined by the union and the union can go to court to force collection. A dues paying non-member cannot be fined or the company forced to terminate the person.
