Just because you own it and it's paid for doesn't necassarily make it the better choice. For instance:
What is the total cost of ownership? IT Labor to keep the systems up and running? Is Merlin easier and less time consuming for the users to operate? If so then how many minutes extra per day does it take to complete transactions times how many users using Septre? What are their budgeted hourly rates?
Let's just say that Merlin "saves" each tech 1 minute per day at a budgeted hourly rate of $60.00/hr or for simple math $1.00 a minute. $1/min time x 3,000 techs x 365 days = a "soft Dollar" cost of $1,075,000 per year.
These are many factors that need to be considered when establishing the true cost. But coming from the culture where the company knows the price of everything and the value of nothing your views aren't surprising and I don't mean that in a negative or bad way towards you personally.
