Why is US charging $1 for bottled water and $2 for Coke?

At the store, bottled water costs just as much as a 20 oz soda, and more than a 12 oz can.

US should raise the price of bottled water to $2 to further unbundle the in-flight beverage pricing matrix. With a 50% increase in in-flight revenue, maybe US will be able to afford a hand-held vacuum cleaner to clean the cabins once a week.

Bottled, purified water is the greatest ruse perpetrated on the American consumer since US Airways First Class.

You take the BASE INGREDIENT of every soft drink (purified water) and you put it in a bottle and sell for the same price as a soft drink without doing anything else to it.

And, for those of you who don't know what purified means...it's typically municipal tap water that's put through reverse osmosis.

It shouldn't be $2. It should be free.

They arent. Coffee and Tea are $1, everything else non alcoholic is $2.
Beverages
Non-alcoholic: $2*
Coca-Cola Classic
Diet Coke
Sprite
Diet Sprite Zero
Minute Maid Apple Juice
Minute Maid Cranberry Apple Cocktail
Minute Maid Orange Juice
Dannon Water
Seagram's Tonic Water
Seagram's Seltzer Water
Seagram's Ginger Ale
Mott's Tomato Juice
Mr. & Mrs. 'T' Bloody Mary Mix

Anything else to try to stir up?

Yep, they should not be charging for it at all.

Let me know if you want a job with DL when US finally augers into the ground. I know a couple people in ATL....

From a another thread that was closed.

Here is a much more accurate analogy of what US is doing using DoUgIe's hotel analogy.

You have multiple brands, let's call them Courtyard, Hampton, Wyndam, Motel 6, etc. I'm sure you will get the point.

All of these hotels have provided free T.V's in the room for years. Many people who DO NOT really do want a TV get one in their room for free whether they ask for it or not. I'm sure many people turn the set on just because it is free. Just think of the millions these chains could have saved if they didn't have to buy all those TV's. Remember now not every one watches that FREE TV in their room.

Then some bright hotel CEO gets drunk one night and says " not every one wants a TV in their room so lets just charge an extra $2.00 a night to those who turn it on. Let's make those who want to use this FREE service pay for it and not charge those who don't want a TV. "I bet we could make an extra 500 million dollars a year in revenue." "And I bet that after a while, no one would want to watch a TV in their room, so we will not have to spend millions buying the sets." "Somebody get out the spread sheets and see how profitable this is going to be"

Wanna guess what is going to happen to that hotel's business over the next year or so?

L4P, But....if that hotel chain was facing "laundry detergent" increases the way the airline is facing fuel increases it may in fact do just that. My point is that this is an apples to oranges analogy. Even so, its nice of you to show up every now and then. Best wishes as always, Mama.

PhxMama,

You know I luv ya, but charging for drinks and water has nothing to with fuel price increases either. There is no direct relationship. The wiz kids started their ala cart pricing well before the fuel excuse.

Wanna guess what happens to the hotel chain when NO ONE ELSE follows their lead, regardless of the justification for the new charges?

BTW, are the sand fleas charging you for the coffee in the office? If so, are you going to be able to afford to stay with them?

And yes I'm on the LSOAP airline again tomorrow. Not my choice as the ticket was purchased for me. I do however have my $20 in pennies in my clear plastic bag and I'm ready for the flight.....

If no one else follows the leader and US doesnt survive than we all have more time to play on this site! Seriously, the other airlines have followed with increases in many ways such as baggage fees-although US may have followed their lead, its getting confusing remembering who started which fees for bags, seats, phone fees etc. that I dont think anyone really cares. B6 with the pillow and blanket fees is just the latest! I think the most critical and telling fees are the minimum 500 mile deletion and the bonus miles. These are the changes I am least willing to get on board with as it affects those who travel the most with US. I am hoping these are reversed but dont see it happening until the spreadsheets advise differently. Will they be reversed if US can survive long enough to see WNs fuel costs more in line with the other airlines? Again, I dont know but for the sake of US employees that count on their paycheck to pay their bills I hope so. Again, its really nice to have you back if not on US aircraft on the US aviation board. Let me know if you pass thru PHX and I can BUY you a drink before you board! Mama

I agree with ya. It just so happens I just sort of use the drink fees as a tangible way to fight back.

I'm at well over a $1 a mile on a ticket tomorrow and even with the fuel increases, this is still a very profitable ticket for LSOAP airlines. It will really chap my cheeks to have to pay two dollars for a bottle of water. I'll let you know the average time it takes to count out two hundred pennys......

You want a couple bucks from me to send some higher up a DELETED BY MODERATOR-

This is probably the only time I wish I was in management with US!!!

MOD NOTE--inappropriate

We go back a long way and I gotta tell ya, I'd NEVER burden a F/A with 200 pennies. NEVER EVER EVER!.
You didn't do well in math did you? That's 2000 pennies in the bag......

They're long flights and I fugure I can kill 5 bottles each way.

Sometimes in any war there is collateral damage. Just ask the folks in Georgia this morning

He/She is NOT the issue.

The Policy is the issue.

You want a couple bucks from me to send some higher up a sex toy and a highly graphic description as what to do with it? I'm with ya all the way. Or maybe we can just forward our enema kits?? I still have mine.

But to put this one on a flight attendent, I just can't and won't do it. It's just that I've always believed in addressing issues with decision makers, not with hourly workers as they can be of no helpeven if they want to be.
I wouldn't either burden the FA with the 200 Pennies, but I wouldn't hesitate to pay that in $15 in pennies for the first bag at check-in. Sure the Ticket Agent isn't the problem either, but that is where I would pull that off at. The Supervisors that lurk around in the background will see this, or should I say, Should see this. This would be great material for their Daily reports.

Bring it on. I dont get off until 9pm. I'm sure once the people in line behind you figure out whats going on it would be a blast to watch. Of course, I might lose count from laughing so hard and have to start all over again. Dont forget the checkin time limit either. Please give me enough time to be able to count out all the pennies or your bag might not make the flight. We cant get bag tags now until we offer the form of payment and if I'm not sure you have enough pennies I wont be able to hit the cash button, just in case you dont have enough.

If US is committed to a paper system, I think the check-in kiosks should be able to sell drink tickets via credit card. For the cash-carrying types, the agent can give you print out a ticket for cash.

You can buy Continental Currency at the kiosk...why not US Airways?

That would work for me.

Considering who Tempe’s customer base is, you would think they would be prepared to accept a lot of loose change.

When I was a punk kid delivering pizzas, a trip to the mobile home park always meant coming back with a couple of pounds of coins.

New FA sales contest; first prize a Cadillac, second prize a set of steak knives, third prize you’re fired!

I think that is a very Easy Question to Answer, Continental is a Well Respected Airline that has People that actually use the Brains to Manage their Company. US Airways only knows how to make money by eliminating services and by aggrivating its customers, Free Advertising. They do not care what type, just as it gets out FREE!
