I sure hope you're not referring to Las Vegas.  While 2008-09 showed a reduction in visitor statistics, the numbers didn't dive.  In fact, 2009 LAS visitor statistics showed a low 36.3 million with a hotel occupancy of 85%.  2014 is at 41.1 million with a hotel occupancy of 89%.  Pretty impressive, IMHO.  Here's a link:  http://www.lvcva.com/includes/content/images/media/docs/Historical-1970-to-2014.pdf

Apparently the carriers that stayed or nested there (Allegiant, Southwest, Spirit, etc.) seem to still be making money.  Allegiant operating revenue DOUBLED from 2010 to 2014.  These carriers planted, grew and seem to be flourishing in LAS.

I'm sure that the same could be made for BOS & LGA as well.  It was simply a business decision by LUS management at the time.  Smart?  Well, we still made money.  BUT....could we have made more by simply reducing and then returning vs. giving up that market to other carriers?  I remember flying the B737 SNA-LAS-DFW in FULL aircraft and 3 jumpseat occupants (2 flight deck, 1 FA).
Chill out Francis.

The past is past. He's talking about the future. Don't worry, PHX is a goldmine.

"One of our bigger businesses, and the growing business, is pharmaceuticals," said Todd Anderson, US Airways manager of cargo, sales and service.

US Airways' daily flight from Tel Aviv, Israel, often carries pharmaceuticals in the belly of the plane with passengers' luggage.

The world's largest generic drug maker, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., is based in Israel.

Teva's Americas headquarters is in North Wales, Montgomery County. Manufacturing is in Sellersville, Bucks County, and other offices are in Frazer, West Chester, and Horsham.

"Teva USA uses both passenger and cargo aircraft into PHL to transport active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished pharmaceuticals," the company said.

Currently, most of the pharmaceuticals are "inbound from the international community," especially Tel Aviv and Europe, said Lewis Townes, US Airways cargo manager in Philadelphia.

"We move a lot of lobsters out of here, going overseas," Townes said. "We get fruit coming in from Europe, and other seafood, as well."

US Airways flies tropical fish from Philadelphia to cities in Canada and Florida, and ships tissue samples and human organs all over the United States.

With 453 daily flights here and 3,197 systemwide, US Airways offers an "express" service that can be quicker than overnight mail. "It may be that we put a package on a flight in Philadelphia at noon and it's in Boston at 3 p.m.," Anderson said.

The average citizen cannot ship packages on a passenger flight because of federal rules that require passenger carriers to do business only with known shippers. Cargo airlines do not have that restriction.

I'm pleased that you see that, Scotty.

Of course PHX is a goldmine.   I just wish I was the one who dreamed up automatic monthly donations and Liberty Ties.

No, I was directly referring your loser phx operation.

You know, like a portapotty on a trail. Wipe your ass with a pull down saniwipe?

For the most recent period where data is available.....................the entire operation until the AWA merger.

Q: What does this say about PHL as a hub? Is there enough connecting traffic for other international flights?
A: Our combined hub structure allows for each of our nine hubs to play a very important role in our overall network strategy. Looking at our international network, PHL is a prime hub for connecting customers to and from main business and leisure destinations throughout Europe and it will continue to be an important strategic hub for our partners through the Atlantic Joint Business.
Hmm. Thanks for the info. The Tel Aviv flight always seemed made good money for me. Perhaps you would like to purchase my left over shekels for you next 330 flight to TLV? I suppose that I will have to bid our European cities.

US Airways certainly kept you in the left seat of 330 with a pay raise from a first officer at PSA and a date of hire seniority number.

How is that boat on Harbor Island and that plane at Montgomery Field working out for you? They must be under maintenance right now. Maintenance can be really cheap if you don't actually have them.

US Airways has certainly managed to keep you working ten days a month on island turns for a full schedule and also your PHX buddies in that money losing hub operation. You certainly are a grateful bunch aren't you?

...and US Airways kept Daddy working also, who got you hired. Tell we are all trying to figure out what your deal is. Is this some kind of Oedipus Complex psychological disorder that needs professional help?

The gist of my post was no base or hub is immune from being closed at the whim of managements decision making process. Who would have ever dreamt that PIT, the center of the USAir universe would ever close.

Your base may be next, even before PHX. Who knows. My money's on Doug Parker...

Nice: quoting PSA great Silverman. He certainly is well remembered. You may want to use his quote also that he would fire any pilot that delayed a flight to grab something to eat even though it was company policy after they took away crew meals even on our fourteen hour days.

Your money doesn't have anything to do with Mr. Parker anymore. You get your PBGC, and your 401K and Pilot Retirement fund that you can thank mostly US Airways for.  Enjoy your retirement.
