This would of course be clearly evidenced by the "basic intelligence" never even tested for by AWA (which your posted premise alone clearly proves)...well...other than to sign on with such an almost-unbelieveable-bottom-feeder that would actually require it's even potential inmates to buy stock that soon proved worthless, offer both the most laughable pay rates in aviation as well as NO pension plan whatever, and of course work at whatever pickaninny duties illustrious management wished of them otherwise to boot?...And all for the privelege of even just calling themselves "pilots"? Whew! Thanks for the always dependable laughs kid. 😉
The fully truthfull bottom line is that NO even supposed "pilot" (in their even slightly right "mind") ever took a job at AWA that so much as had ANY other actually offered options....Period....Or perhaps it was all just for the love of the PHX locale? 🙂
As usual, spouting your usual bile.
I can tell you from personal experience and acquaintance that there are many fine former America West pilots. Many of them actually came from your favorite pipeline, the USAF, after retirement , to begin a second career.
Not many airlines were hiring in 1983, and PSA even furloughed.
So the prospect of getting in on the ground floor of a new airline with a chance for a possible quick upgrade to Captain must have sounded pretty good to those that applied to America West.
One might wonder how you arrived at lowly PSA in 1986. Why a man of your considerable qualifications would accept employment at a 55 plane regional airline when American and Delta we're hiring is beyond me. Perhaps it had something to do with the easy commute from Travis AFB to LAX or SFO? It wasn't the money, because PSA didn't pay as well ask the big boys. Maybe it was the "shiny jet syndrome", trading a 4 engine USAF cargo jet for a brand new 4 engine BAE146.
The really ironic twist of this story can be illustrated by an anecdote from an all hands meeting where PSA Chairman Paul Barkley announced cutbacks in 1983. Someone asked him to comment on that startup airline over in Phoenix and what impact, if any, it would have on PSA's plans.
Mr. Barkley chuckled and said, "Oh America West? They won't even be around this time next year!"
Well guess what? They're still around, and now running the largest airline in the world......
And it was the hard work and dedication of those pilots and other employee groups that you malign so unkindly, that kept them afloat in hard times while competing nose to nose with Southwest at PHX. Much like the good people at USAirways kept it flying through TWO CH11 bankruptcies....
