AFA Labor Thread 6/14 -

Management will still make money becauz the same 100 people that steal from the liq money til will steal from the soda money til. So the company will be getting 90% and they know this, so on a 4 day the company will get $500-$1,000 dependiing on how many legs. Handhelds would prevent this and I wish we had them to start this nonsense, I, for one, hate dealing with cash.

The Company, IMHO has created a Monster. 😛h34r: The only ones to blame are the Sandcastle handing down the duties. Mgmt needs to get real, and give US fair wages, and a little respect. We are here for safety of the a/c, and are not salesman and women!! WHERE IS OUR UNION WHEN WE NEED THEM MOST?? Stop being such pushovers, JUST SAY NO TO MORE SALES ONBOARD!!!

It's alittle too late to stop now...this all started when Dave Segal had us sell that Wolfgang Puck crap. The union should have said no and with the unions leadership, we should have banded together and not sold it...hindsight is 20/20.

From my knowledge, HP was one of the first to start sales onboard the a/c back in 2002. The reason being was because of 9-11, and the crisis of HP surviving as a stand alone carrier. There was much talk and anomousity with the Union in those days, but no one took a stand. It was either make more income for the company, or fold. Things are a little different now, we are in major DEFENSE mode it seems, and the union becomes weaker everytime around!
Where is our protection?
Blame Fuel prices for everthing??? How bout mgmt for once?!!!!!!!!!!! OH, and sorry we can't afford the pax's anymore per ticket price???
Doesn't mean you make your workers, fa's, slave drivers and sales people to make up the costs!!! Some fa's can't pay there bills??! B.S.! 🙄
Do you really think this company was not expecting FUEL to SKYROCKET??! Blame them for not being prepared!

If they want to charge for sodas, why don't they just charge a dollar? It's not going to break anyone's pocketbook and we wouldn't have to go fishing for change so much. Most people have a buck in their pocket.

And we'd still make money.

And give them the stupid can.

I agree with you, but $2 isn't going to break anyone's pocketbook either.......

The fact that we need to make change for anything of the small amount is going to be a nightmare....

If by the end of the flight we STILL don't have your change the drink is on US.

Selling sodas is nonsense. US should do like another airline and sell amenity kits on red eyes and transatlantic flights. That is what would generate money for the company. I will not be buying a soda for $2. I can buy a bottle in the airport for $1.75. So I guess I will continue what I have always done, get food in terminal with soda and buy an extra bottle on my way to the gate. That way US doesn't get any more of my money!

Bingo! Don't you see? THAT is what they are counting on! Everyone will think they are "beating the system" by purchasing sodas elsewhere, and USAir will save LOADS of $$ by using a lot less sodas!!

You have to look at it from the other end... they may not generate a lot of revenue in sales, but they will save a lot in stock... they are probably banking on people like you....

Well I think the company is shooting themselves in the foot by raising liquor to $7.00. For a mini? C'mon even for air travel? These charges are simply knee jerk reactions and not thought out AT ALL. In the thread I started about revenue generating ideas we had some good thoughts going. Like just mentioned above. How many people would buy a CLEAN and NEW pillow/blanket or an amenity kit to refresh before arriving somewhere on the east coast? Or how about an activity kit to keep kids busy? Remember the blue/teal kids bags on transatlantic? THINK people THINK! ! ! ! 🙄

Was that before Peoples Express?
I bought a $49.00 fare on PeoplExpress in 1983. Onboard, I bought a snackpack and soda for 3 bucks. The snackpack had a large piece of smoked sausage, some cheese and rye crackers, and a Walker shortbread cookie. I was a poor college student and was so happy PeoplExpress was around.

Back to AFA:

Selling is nothing new so it's a losing battle to fight this one, IMO.

Hmmm...back to AFA. The recent Council 70 newsletter published the PHL officers FPL for the past few months ...

AFA Pay:
At our April meeting, a motion was made that it be reported what your local council officers earn in flight pay hours each month.

Here's the breakdown:
-- John McCorkle, LEC President: April 68 hours; May 104 hours; June 79 hours
-- Grace Jones, LEC VP: April 80 hours; May 80 hours; June 90 hours
-- Dan Sampey, LEC Sec: April 55 hours; May 50 hours; June 75 hours

There are a few things you should know: first, our hours are reduced during the months we have vacation. Also, when I attend a CWA convention or AFA board of directors meeting, or an MEC meeting, those hours do not come from the local budget. Also, all local councils receive company-paid flight pay loss to offset the local budget. And most importantly, these hours you see above represent less than half of the actual time we all spend conducting AFA business each day.

However, does anyone know what other expenses they are claiming?? What about mileage to/from their commuter places?? What about per diem? When I did union work back in the late 80's, one of the reasons I resigned was because they wanted me to claim the maximum per diem for each meal for the day I was doing grievances. I was told I had to claim the max in order to keep the budget high so we got our share of money from AFA National. At that time, breakfast was a claim of $7, lunch was $12 and dinner was somewhere around $21. I'm sure 20 years later those numbers have increased. Should we be asking our union officials what they are claiming. We had a previous sec/treas. (sorry can't remember the name) who claimed babysitting when she worked in the office and had to leave her kid at home.
I'll be working on the 7th when the PHL meeting is but perhaps this is a question that we should have answered. Just how much TOTAL are they getting and what is the justification....and before someone posts on here that I should stop attacking the PHL office, I think this is information that this should apply to EVERY base. I'm glad someone at the April meeting said they wanted this made available for the membership but I think we should know it ALL.
