APATHY
Destroyer of the complacent , conquer of the tame …
In our little world we have some dangers , this is one of them , perhaps the most dangerous of them all. A union is only as strong as it’s membership , a weak membership will produce weak results . Our turn out numbers for our recent election show me that we have a great many members who no longer care , or never cared to begin with . Would you go to war with only half of your army ? Would you start a road trip with only half a tank of gas ? We must find ways to reengage the membership , or rather YOU must find a way to organize your friends , why you ? Because who else is reading this ? If you care enough to be a member on us aviation or even a lurker then you have some interest in what’s going on . Personally I think the whole idea of “organizing “ is seriously overblown . If you and I are friends , if we know one another and care about each others well being , we will take steps to help one another , thus it is with our union . As far as I’m concerned solidarity starts in the bin of an aircraft born of sweat and mutual struggle .
How do you defeat apathy ? Well there are two types of it that we will have to fight in the near future , the war within our selves and the lack of caring in others . I have found that the best way to stave off that dark pit of emptiness within is with anger , with rage . Remind yourself of the injustices that have been committed against you and yours , then remember what is is your fighting for and go forward.
To shake others out of their complacency can be somewhat difficult . Never underestimate the power of self interest . If your going to convince “bob “ who works here part time and has a “Real job “ then your going to have to take one of three routes 1. Either you will have to convince bob that more pay and better benefits is a sufficient enough plus for him to get involved . 2 you will have to appeal to bob for help because you yourself are hurting and need his help as a friend and co worker or last but not least you will have to goad his ego . Egos , we all have them no matter how well we hid them , if bob can’t be convinced to help himself or others , he must made to understand that he’s been slighted , insulted , abused by this company .How you go about it is up to you for there are as many ways to push peoples buttons as there are people .
