Cactus will likely go away with the name America West. And so long as the airline is called USAir, that's what the call sign should be.

I disagree.

As long as the company is headquartered in Arizona, the call sign should be "Cactus."

I'm hoping Cactus remains, and I think there is widespread support for that. I think the only hindrance to using Cactus would be retraining ATC personnel. We would probably keep the USA identifier instead of AWE, because that would be more recognizable with USAirways. That would entail all controllers "re-learning" to say "Cactus" when they see USA on their scopes.

Since we are operating 2 certificates for at least two years, this change is a long ways off. I also think Joe Chronic & David Seymour are looking into what it would take to keep Cactus.

Considering that a large majority of the new company "US Airways" will not be centralized in the southwest, I doubt they will keep the cactus call sign. It will be a global carrier with reach all over the United States, not just the southwest. A flight between Richmond and Philadelphia with a call sign "Cactus".... A US carrier should be called just that...."Usair".... I'm sure it doesn't really matter. The call sigh could be "BozoAir" for all it matters. LOL

Hopefully this doesnt sound mean..but..alot of people on the east coast have no idea who America West is. Everyone I talk to about this(non airline) have never heard of AWA. Not even my own father. I think you have a great airline..but..the call sign should stay the same..USAIR.

One could say that a lot of people on the West Coast have no idea who US Airways is, either.

The only reason I remember USAir is that I flew them for about 6 months after they bought out Pacific Southwest Airlines... until their two-bit management dropped all the wonderful PSA routes and went back east.

That's the reason why the company name is staying USAirways. The call sign isn't used at all with the public, so the name recognition would probably have no bearing on which one is used.

LOL..funny..yeah right...LOL...

Hey guys, it's a JOB! If you aren't happy after the merger then get a new one. Lots of USAirways employees have and I'm one of them. I make more today than 2 years ago before all the pay cuts (20 years seniority).

And if my former fellow employees whine and cry then tell them to get out, too! Life is all about change and even though it might be frightening it is the way of the world. I hope everyone can look forward to what is new and exciting rather that cry about the past (the line I alwaly hated was - 'It wans't like this when we were PIED - MONT!')

This is a positive move but only with all of you behind it - and all of US, too.

I voted for cactus.

The call sign should be "cactus" to remind the US pilots that this is a new company.

It's also a respectful gesture to the AWA pilots.
