CLT getting 2 new routes?

Does anyone remember before 9-11 that US was going to start AUS and SAT service? Does anyone know if that was going to be mainline back then?

I also remember that they were going to start Portland back then too but all of this fell apart right after 9-11

It would've been mainline (seek link below), but unfortunately, it was never started because of 9-11.

On another note, people on here have been saying US needed CLT-AUS/SAT service for years, and now that it is going to be flown by a regional everyone is shocked -- What did you expect? Heck, most our flights to IAH aren't even mainline.

I'm surprised they didn't let Republic fly this one though. Good luck sitting in one of those CR9 seats for 3+ hrs though.

NFW I'm flying on a CR9 that long.

I'll stay on UA or AA for AUS and SAT from PHL. At least UA has E+ in their CRJs.

If I still have to connect and there is no chance at an upgrade because it is a CR9 then there is no reason to fly US from anywhere but CLT on that route.

AUS and SAT have mainline service and are worked by US people just because they are adding RJ service does not make it less important for them or to the employees that want to go there out of CLT.

AUS is run by HP/US mainline employees. SAT is operated by CO. :huh:

Although I'm glad to FINALLY see the service re-instated.....I'm disappointed that it's to CLT only and that it will be on Express instead of mainline because I thought it would have been a perfect fit for the E190. It's amazing that US would not want to connect these cities with all the TransAtlantic service offered through PHL. I do know that the #2 nonstop destination out of Austin to the N.E is to JFK. SWA starts their N/S to AUS and SAT from PHL on March 17th.....

CLT-AUS-SAT are routes we used to fly with the 737-200 and later the -300. U discontinued the service when we parked over half of the mainline fleet.

Both SAT and AUS had US service to PIT sometime back in the 1990's (before Austin-Bergstrom opened in 1999) but I don't think US ever served SAT/AUS with nonstop flights to CLT

CLT-SAT was around for most of the 90s, and was operating once a day when it was cut in 9/97. CLT-AUS operated on and off again throughout the mid 90s

At one point when service to both cities was in full swing both AUS/SAT had 5 flights each...2 to CLT/ 2 to PIT/ and 1 to PHL. And ALL flights were FULL. I remember purchasing Buddy Passes and ID 90's for friends and family back then for over $200, so the routes definitely made money! Hopefully the routes will do well again and they'll upgrade the service.

The flight use to go PIT-CLT-SAT-AUS-CLT, with a 737-300 or 400.

In CLT it was common to see a Police Officer with a bomb sniffing dog in F/C as the dogs were property of the Feds and use to go to SAT for their exams and training.
