Well the company has lied before. What is to stop them from renegging on the severance?

It's harder to do, since the bankruptcy court would be managing it. It's not impossible, but certainly harder to do.

If you are being laid off then your prospects of landing another job in aviation are better if USAIR no longer exists...
Perhaps slightly. It depends on how other airlines react to the layoffs from the concessions, and how they react to the layoffs that result from US folding. Do you know how they're going to respond?

The guy who was junior to you is now senior to you because he got laid off and started at the new place before you.
Well, now, you can fix that by jumping ship now instead of waiting for the axe to fall. Did you mention that, Bob?

So who do you work for? What brings you here?
I do not work in the airline industry. Beyond that, who I work for is not your business. I've explained several times in the past why I'm here. If you care to find out, you can use the Search feature. It's really handy, and it's working now.

Do you? Historically after one airline folds many of its former employees are hired on by other airlines due to attrition and expansion. In fact the majority of my coworkers started their careers at other carriers that no longer exist.

Well if you do that you do not get unemployment to cover the transition period.

Ok, so you have something to hide. So falling wages in the airline industry will have no negative impact on you, in fact they could benifit you in the form of cheap airfares, among other things, right?

Yes, but it's dependent on a lot of factors. They also have hired when another carrier shrinks.

What's more important, seniority or unemployment insurance? Each person gets to decide that for themselves.

So falling wages in the airline industry ... could benifit you in the form of cheap airfares right?
They could, but I'm not really focused on that. In fact, the direction the industry is currently headed is detrimental to me, since the premium services that I came to enjoy through most of the 90s are going away. So I'm also losing something. As someone who has been doing more business travel than leisure travel, I'd say I'm getting the short end of the stick here.

I know you're looking for there to be some nefarious, ulterior motive here, but it's just not there. PITbull can probably vouch for that.

I also have a job. And I have confidence that my employer will be around for more than a few more months.

If I were an employee of US, I doubt I'd be on this board.
