That's a problem, Garf, you don't have a say. That's a good thing. You speak not from knowledge of all the different international cultures and traditions that each head of state honors and respects, but from a crass set of manners. If they followed your practical simplistic answer, there would never be an agreement reached. You might want to pick up a copy of Emily Post or Amy Vanderbilt book on manners.

I am not talking about ignoring religious and cultural ideas. I am talking about if the Queen puts her arm around the First lady there is nothing wrong with the First Lady responding in kind.

Our media here keeps proping him up, but the international press has a much different view of him. Obama is being laughed at in international circles.

I have been in Paris for a significant amount of time for the past couple months, and I generally get my news from France 24 while out there. I believe it is funded by the french government. I have not seen what you are speaking of. While I agree that there isn't as much "infatuation" as we have in the US, I do not think France 24 has been showing a much different view. Of course, that is only anecdotal evidence from 1 channel in 1 other country.

Well; it means exactly what is stated: Simply anecdotal evidence of what I experienced... which is apparently different from what novaqt experienced or, if he/she hasn't experienced first hand, believes of the foreign press. Other than what I have experienced, I cannot and do not presume to know how the foreign press is treating the situation.

it's amazing what a big deal you've made over a bow ....

several days later that bow hasn't changed my life in any way .... i doubt the president is thinking about it ... the bow hasn't helped to improve our economy ...

in all likely hood that gesture proably helped to improve relatios slightly ... but proably not to the point where they will give us free oil ....

What I see is a double standard. Bush kissing and holding hands, OK. Obama's half assed bow, end of the world.

It it were me I'd invite or even visit several Islamic Clerics that are widely respected throught the Middle East and not so gently inform them that if ONE US citizen gets so much as a hang nail from a terrorist attack on US Soil, Mecca will cease to exist except as a memory and I'd launch the missile myself on National Television.

Killing people who have nothing to do with a terrorist act is counterproductive to say the least.
