All of this restructuring just announced, along with the push for consolidation only points to one thing...merger.

They should have picked a new name the last go around.

The cost would have been far out weighed by the benefits.

I always felt we should had taken the America West name. These bozos in Arizona managed to take an already crappy airline and name and make it worse. Meanwhile the AW goes away with a "poor America West, they were so good" when it was THEIR management that screwed up things as they currently are. Had money been spent for another name, it wouldn't had mattered. We would just be the evil (fill in the blank) airline.

Continental president says airline would consider merger with United

http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ss...t_says_air.html

Well since this was just put out, it looks like US could be left without a dance partner, although "Continental Airlines President Jeff Smisek says the carrier will consider merging with United Airlines if the new combination of Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines becomes a profitable hookup."

and I don't see that happeneing any time in the near or far future

Don’t care about the name just get ride of SHARES/QIK

When they decided to go with US Airways and not America West, the logic presented by Parker was that, according to a study the Company had done, US Airways and America West had similar recognition in every aspect (total recognition, good service, bad service...) except one: International. Because an equal percentage felt both were a good airline (based solely on name recognition) US Airways had the needed credibility internationally. Personally, I looked at it as more people (more had heard of US then HP) knew US sucked, but that's just my opinion. Given the position Management has taken with heritage I actually expect in the event of a merger for them to fight to keep the US Airways name.

A CO/UA merger is of far greater benefit for US, than them merging with anyone.

Looks like we are 50/50 on a name change.....wonder how this poll would look each of the last 10 years.....probably not much different.

Who in their right mind could care what were called, I want my pay back to where it should be, I care about the numbers on the check not the name.

POLL: The US Airways name?, Will a merger end the US Airways name in 2010?

One could only hope..... pray,...... beg,...... plead to the gods...... to make it so.

What do you think?

I certainly HOPE the name goes away. The reputation has always been less than stellar even since Allegheny days, but what little they did do well (business travel) has since been flushed down the crapper by the Tempe brain trust.

I voted NO simply because no merger, or even an agreement to merge, will take place in 2010.

But I do think the USAirways name will go away at some point in the next 5 years. It may eventually merge, or simply die on the vine.

Delta posted a $51 net profit, excluding special items, for the third quarter:

http://news.delta.com/index.php?s=43&item=777

Delta's net income for the September 2009 quarter was $51 million, or $0.06 per share, excluding $212 million in special items(1).

I see DL/NW becoming very profitable just as soon as the recession ends and business air travel starts to pick up again.

I don't think so. If it is with a legacy carrier - than, yes.

US Airways has a nice logo. I hope no matter what merger - it would stick around.

Absolutely, US Airways name and logo represent The United States, American Airlines represents America (internationally).. I have relatives overseas that dont recognize the Continental or Delta brand...may these names live forever.
