Hello all, I just had a question. My dad was the Captain aboard a west A321 flight from PHX-CLT. Upon arriving in CLT they discovered the jetway was broken and they decided to deplane by airstairs via door 1R. My dad got a call from the f/a saying she wouldn't open the door because she wasn't allowed to and the airstairs guy wouldn't either. So, my dad had to come out and open the door... What are the procedures on this?

The gate agent opens the door on the Airbus planes after getting the thumbs up from the FA. This ensures there is not an inadvertent slide deployment as the slide is disarmed when the opened from the outside. The procedure is to wait for a gate agent to open the door, but your Dad is the Captain and can open the door if he so wishes.

Hope this answers your questions.

WOW! The ramper/CSA should knock on door, and Flight Attendant gives a thumbs UP in the Window, then CSA opens the door from outside!!! No rocket science. My lord. The intimidation has really spread all over the US AIR SYSTEM!!!!! I would hate to work with that fa, when we have an actual EMERGENCY, give me a break, OPEN THE DOOR, it is DISARMED!!! LOL. shock!

WCT needs targeted training. Again!
The flight attendant was doing the proper procedure. Flight Attendants NEVER opens the door from the inside, unless it was an emergency and this clearly was NOT an emergency. I would put down that Oprah book and spend some time online reviewing the P&P Manual.

Targeted training?? OOPS. Hot nuts, get real. Well then, you better let all the cleaning crews in all of our stations know NEVER TO OPEN THE DOORS FROM THE INSIDE, and Catering TOO! And have you never opened a door to get ventilation because it is TOO HOT???? I clearly stated, the fa waits for the csa/ramper to knock, then give thumbs up, then THEY OPEN THE DOOR! But, by Capt. discretion, if you need to, they will give the clear to open from Inside. Let another Fa witness this happening. Bottom line, the door, if opened from the outside will AUTOMATICALLY DISARM.

I would have made sure I had verification from another f/a and opened it. While the f/a was following normal door operating procedures in an irregular instance like that you do what you need to do. There is firm on procedure and following rules and there over the top strange. 🙄

While gate agents are trained in door opening, my gues is that the ramp person who drove the mobile stairs is not and was afraid to open the door.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Lol its good to know the procedures now...

I suspect wct has never been to any flight attendant training class. As far as doing what we have to do in justifying opening an airbus door in a non-emergency situation, I for one would not touch it. If, God forbid, something happened, management will not be issuing any mulligans based on this being a non-emergent irregular ops incident where the offending flight attendant rationalized that he was doing "what he had to do."

There is not a clear passage to point out in the IEM. The first one that may apply and is the one of the first items we learn in training " 14 CFR part 91.3- The pilot in command of an aircraft is directly responsible and the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft...........If the captain instructs you to perform duties believed to be in conflict with company policies and procedures, respectfully bring this to his/her attetion but abide by the instructions."
Second- Only at the direction of the Captain will an aircraft door be opened by a F/A for ventilation purposes.

It is still unclear why a gate agent was not there. What good does opening the door do if the passengers are unable to deplane.

My guess is the Captain decided to just open the door rather then insist that FAs open a door when they were uncomfortable doing so.

My dad was the captain and he said he didn't insist but the f/a just said she couldn't open the door, so he did it himself. The airstairs operator put them up to the 1R door due to the inop jetway blocking the 1L door. All 180+ pax (including wheelchairs) went down the stairs.

This reminds me of the girl in my class that had the run in with the Captain over the MD-80 tail cone  They had disabled or removed the rear stairs on those things. They land and he calls on the interphone asking her to the lower the rear stairs. She informs him that there were no stairs just the tail cone emergency exit. Back and forth and it gets heated. He pulls out some flight deck manual (out of date) and says I see right here there are stairs! She informs him there is only one lever back there and it was not for the tail cone stairs. He screams JUST LOWER THE *** stairs! She says FINE! And jettisons the tail cone! OPPS!
