If I were a F/A -- my "perfect" uniform:
Affordable -- I would want to purchase extra pieces "just in case" -- I'd be willing to pay for good quality that can be spot cleaned easily and dry-cleaned regularly without getting shiny -- i.e. Wool. Yes, I said wool. Even in the desert -- a light-weight wool blend with lycra for a little stretch and shape retention, maybe treated so it resists stains.
Comfortable -- stretching, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling -- the uniform has to be able to all these things with a human being in it, without ripping a seam and without exposing "me", either.
Color? Navy, the same standard shade of now -- or maybe an "updated" Navy -- think marine blue or steel blue -- something just a little lighter in color than the current uniform -- maybe.
I would want:
Blazer
Vest
Skirt
Pants
Coulottes
in this fabric (and guys, blazer, vest & slacks)
then,
Long sleeve shirt
short sleeve shirt
Tie or scarf
belt
Sweater
etc...
Blouse/Shirt -- white -- solid white colar with red and turquoise tiny stripes. Yes, red and turquoise -- from USA and AWA -- AND they really look really good together! (same red from today's USA livery and the teal-ly turquoise from AWA). Again, a very high quality fabric that has some stretch and is not see-through, is stain-resistant, easy to iron, and that can be machine-washed.
And, doesn't turn gray or yellow after a few launderings!
Mens/Womens styles of shirts/blouses:
Straight collar (that looks good buttoned up with a tie on or open 1-2 buttons on the men without ties and on the women too -- or with a scarf tucked in there on the women)
Long sleeve
short sleeve
And NO pockets for women!
OPTIONAL Mens tie/Womens tie/Womens scarf:
Using the red/turquoise combo with navy and white, create a beautiful paisley in a VERY high quality man-made fiber or Silk that can be made into beautiful looking ties for men that tie nicely and sit at their neck appropriately. Not like some of the fabrics/styles out there that look like someone forced you to buy and wear that ugly thing and you really wish you didn't have to -- something you're proud to "dress up" in that ADDS to the look instead of distracts. And use the same fabric to create a tailored women's tie and beautiful scarf options (even though it's hot in the desert, it's nice to have a scarf to wrap around the neck in these over-cooled buildings, etc -- and it's nice when it ADDS to the look -- very professional, very European (have you ever seen a chic French woman without a scarf?))
Also, using the red/turquoise/navy/white combo -- make up "Hawaiin" style shirts for the Hawaii F/A's and ties for the pilots in the same pattern. Think tropical & lush. And optional to the Carribean. However, mens ties and ladies scarves could be made from the same pattern and be very quick to change to add a little "flair" to those flights...
A navy belt, or RED for women as an option -- but only up to waist size 36 -- why highlight a not so good area with a stripe of red? But, if you've got it! Flaunt it!
A sweater -- in navy, or optional Turquoise! In a good, high quality fabric that doesn't stretch out of shape (2-4% lycra) and doesn't pill.
Ladies dress - personally, I'm not a fan of dresses so I really couldn't say what I would want in a uniform dress style. The Delta red dresses are spectacular! Thankfully, they only make them up to size 10 -- they wouldn't look so great on larger sizes... However, I wonder about the fabric care and maitenance and about the comfort...
Ok, so I'm not really a flight attendant (but I've played one on TV) and I probably have no idea what I'm talking about -- but I know what looks good and what makes people feel good about how they're dressed. And, it's not just how you're dressed, but how other people react to you when you're dressed in certain ways...
Professional trumps casual any day, in my opinion...
