US Airways pilots hold silent protest over contract

Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Bob Donaldson, Post-Gazette

US Airways pilots stand at attention, awaiting their turn to march a military square with their picket signs on the ticketing concourse at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport this morning. About 75 pilots took part in the silent informational protest to call attention to their stalled contract negotiations with the airline.

Airline pilots today were holding a silent but dramatic demonstration at Pittsburgh International Airport to protest the lack of progress in combining US Airways and former America West pilots into a single labor contract.

About 75 uniformed pilots were silently standing at attention near the main ticketing area this morning as four others, holding picket signs in front of them, marched in precise squares with tight, military turns. The picketers were not disrupting operations, but representatives were explaining their protest to any interested passengers.

The protest was expected to last for most of the morning.

The pilot groups, both of whom are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, said in a news release they have been waiting for US Airways' management to put forward "proposals that reflect US Airways' successful position in the industry, rather than insisting on cramming down bankruptcy-driven proposals that were put in place so that the company could survive after the post-9/11 industry downturn."

They said US Airways management is also demanding that the pilots shoulder the burden of the costs incurred by the US Airways and America West merger.
