US Airways' wish list for global flights growsThe carrier added India, Israel, Russia and Turkey as likely routes from Phila. It hopes to add 2 to 4 each year.

US Airways has added India, Israel, Russia and Turkey to the list of countries where it would like to start flying nonstop from Philadelphia International Airport in the next few years.
US Airways senior vice president C.A. Howlett, who was at the airport yesterday to mark the launch of service to three European cities, said the airline planned to add two to four international routes a year from Philadelphia, provided it could lease enough gates and acquire more long-haul airplanes.

Howlett reeled off a list of cities, countries or airports spanning the globe that are under consideration: Moscow; Tel Aviv, Israel; Istanbul, Turkey; London Heathrow Airport; Birmingham, England; China; India; and Japan.

"We're committed to making international service a key component of Philadelphia's future," he said.

Earlier this year, US Airways chief executive officer Doug Parker announced the airline's intention to apply to the U.S. Department of Transportation for rights to fly nonstop between Philadelphia and Shanghai, China, a route it could get in the next year or two.

Parker also said at the time that flights to Japan could be on the horizon, but that the airline would need to lease or buy more long-range Airbus or Boeing jets capable of flying nonstop to Asia.

In the last month, US Airways has started new routes to Athens, Greece; Brussels, Belgium; and Zurich, Switzerland, and resumed seasonal service to six other European cities. The airline now flies between Philadelphia and 19 European destinations in the summer, and keeps service to 10 of the cities going throughout the year.

Howlett said that increasing international service required resolving "some issues," an allusion to a dispute US Airways and the airport had for more than a year over how to use the gates in Terminal A-East.

Delta Air Lines will move its operations this fall from Terminal E to A-East, freeing up four gates so Southwest Airlines can expand its domestic routes. US Airways objected to letting Delta use A-East for its domestic flights, when the concourse was originally designed for international service. But US Airways and the airport devised a plan to maximize use of its international gates in Terminal A-West, enabling the airline to start all of its new European service this summer.

To add more flights, "we have to have some place to land the planes," Howlett said. "We know Philadelphia is committed, and we are, too."

Excellent news, seriously.
However, (you knew there had to be one), we need more than 50 mins min conx to get these people to PHL to MAKE their new intl flight. This week we've given away massive amounts of people because of delays and cancellations and 50 mins for many of the conx IS NOT ENOUGH TIME. You're barely likely to make it if we are on time, but its PHL we're talking about, come on.
MARKETING, why arent you listening to us on the front line again? Summertime+PHL+Tstorms/ATC = Need more than 50 mins if we want our customers to get home.
Had a lady try for 2 days on US, finally gave her to CO since we were full the rest of the week.
Money walking out the door again!

Even if we don't get LHR anytime soon. We need to increase flts to the UK. Not too long ago we had 4 daily flts to LGW. 2 from PHL and 1 each from PIT and CLT. We also has 2x from PHL to CDG . Int'l is where the money is , both Europe and the Caribbean. We can increase CLT Int'l and add some from BOS , especially to the UK and Ireland. We connect pax to EI to SNN & DUB thru BOS every day. Why not keep them on us. Get the planes and we will fill them.

US use to fly BOS-FRA, flight died and went back to CLT where it made money.

Until they can prove they can manage what they already have, they should get NOTHING. Perhaps they should even cut back on what they are already operating since they have proven they can't handle the current load.

There should be minimum 1 hour connecting times in PHL for domestic and 2 hr for international....maybe 3 on international arrivals due to the sorry state of bags and customs there.....

I definitely agree that we must get our house in order before we do any more Int'l. Service must to consistent with attention to the details of what is expected for international service. Just look at the appearance of the foreign crews. They are meticulous to detail and appearance. Remember "Impressions of Excellence? Enough of the business casual garbage. Bring back some higher standards and enforce them. Just because many of our passengers are trailer park doesn't mean we have to be also. You can't expect class service with a blue jeans and shorts mentality. Our int'l flights should be the cream of the crop , not the bottom of the barrel. There should also be no less than 2 hours connecting time in PHL for any European destinations. Why give all those passengers to someone else if you get to keep them all by adjusting your scheduling to better accomodate the passengers.

9 destinations is an rather large number of destinations to fly to seasonally, that's almost half the TA operation that doesn't operate during the winter. The PHL airport authority i'm sure wants to work with them, but they probably want US to serve more destinations throughout the year. At this point i would be more worried about finding long-haul planes than having gates for them.

I agree completely. This is excellent news, get some widebodies and exploit Philly for all its international potential... but start ACTING like a global carrier.

If you want to be an airline that serves all the corners of the world you need to not only have a competitive product for the international flights themselves, but over the whole network. Even if you have a snazzy product on the way in, once they connect onto our filthy airplanes with our overly casual product and collection of motley express carriers THAT is the experience they will remember. USA domestic service is nothing to write home about, so you really have to SUCK big time to earn the title of worst, which we just officially did.

No one takes this airline seriously. The industry, the customers, nor the employees. We are a joke and in need of a major image overhaul (along with operations, labor relations etc). They need to make up thier mind whether they want to be America West on steriods or an actual global network carrier. It is just as easy to come to the United States through Newark.

Standards and Impressions Matter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Business Casual is Bull****.We have to higher expectations than we have. We have to expect better from Tempe and everyone associated with us. If they can't meet the elevated expectations than maybe they need to move on , and that means our low performance contract express carriers also. Either lead, follow or get out of the way., and it's time for Tempe to lead from the front rather than from the rear. If they can't or are unwilling then it is time for them to go and for us to find someone who WILL. We complain that we do not get treated like professionals , but if we don't don't look professional and don't act professional how can we expect anyone to treat us or respect us as professionals?

Right

This management team acts like they can plunk down the money today and fly the aircraft tomorrow. They can make all the annoucements they like, but until they buy some aircraft, this is more cannon fodder.

You have to "think" like they do in marketing. If the connection time is too long, people will book a quicker connection with some other airline. Doesn't matter that a longer connection is feasible from both a passenger and baggage standpoint. If we have to give some away sometime, that's ok. It isnt EVERYDAY. Well, in the summer, it nearly IS every damn day. We used to have an express flight to connect with the FCO flight. 50 minutes from F to A concourse? WHAT are they smoking? I want some too! ;)
