CWA/Teamster labor thread -

I was talking shop with a flight attendant the other day and he pointed out something interesting. The company has failed to honor the Pilot and FA Snap Backs, which if history repeats itself they will more than likely fail to honor ours. Thoughts?

I didnt think anyones contract snapped back until 2012. When were the FAs and Pilots snap backs supposed to have taken effect?

Not sure about this FA's but I assume he was talking about the Pilots LOA93.

Went looking myself. There are two different snap back issues being discussed.

Flight attendants- January 1, 2012 SNAP BACKS

The current East Collective Bargaining Agreement contains numerous snap backs effective January 1, 2012. These snapbacks were negotiated as part of the 2005 bankruptcy contract. Listed below are the snap backs with a brief discussion on each one and the contract page.

Pilots -Almost all post 911 concessionary contract amendments (LOAs) had snapback clauses. US Airways pilots did not, although the AFA (F/As) did have snapback language in their LOA. The East pilots got a 35 million dollar (split among the East pilots) payment in lieu of snapbacks.

The other snapbacks being discussed by the pilots were in regards to change in control, not concessionary contract provisions. Two different snap backs triggered by two different events. The 2012 snapbacks were all simple contract language in exchange for concessionary contracts. The other "snapback" provision was due to a change in control of the company which the company says never happened with the merger.

Mr Parker, echoed his CEO peers in reporting strong demand continuing even as unit revenues jumped 8%. He also noted a year-on-year decline in mainline non-fuel unit costs.
The company also announced subsidiary Piedmont Airlines will assume ground handling for all Express operations at Phoenix and 14 other locations, and will ultimately include Express ground handling at all its hubs. Piedmont is replacing Mesa now that that company is out of the ground handling business post bankruptcy.

Whipsawing CWA between Piedmont and mainline employees. Kept the jobs at express pay/benefits/work rules. More stations and jobs going express BUT CWA members kept the jobs for the good of the employees keeping CWA jobs one-way or a another

Velvet kept her perfect arbitration record intact, losing the CAR job duty restrictions grievance. Reason, failure to fille grievance in a timely manner.

Your union dues hard at work.

Surveys passed out yesterday in CLT. Any other locations getting them yet?

PHX got ours last week.

What are some suggestions from other CWA/IBT members for priorities in the new contract?

CWA better negotiate some health-care benefits for retirees or you are totally screwed working here?

If workers are having this much difficulty saving for retirement, where in the world will they find the money to pay what Rep. Ryan would make them pay for Medicare coverage when they turn 65?

Ryan’s “blueprint” is one that will take America back to the pre-1965 days when senior citizens were losing their homes and their farms to pay for medical care. They were becoming destitute—and dying much earlier than they are today—because insurers would not sell them coverage because they were too much of a risk to insure, and there was no safety net for them.

That’s exactly the same place future senior citizens would find themselves if Ryan’s plan to privative Medicare ever becomes public policy.

If you continue working here and turn 65 after 2021 you are totally screwed ...... http://wendellpotter.com/2011/04/ryans-medicare-plan-would-be-a-windfall-for-insurance-companies/

The Ryan plan if passed will cost US Airways employees tens of thousands of dollars when they retire.

Over the past 15-20 years government oversight and its lust for cheap airline tickets pushed the entire airline industry into bankruptcy where our “legacy” pensions were dumped on the PBGC, (taxpayer). Sr Pilot pensions dropped from $100,000 per year to the PBGC cap of $37,500 per year. Mine dropped from $24,000 per year to $7,500 per year. The United States is as broke as US Airways and the other airlines were a few years ago.

How can the Gov. justify another attack on the private sector prior to placing EVERY SINGLE PUBLIC SECTOR pension into a PBGC modeled plan with a cap of $37,500? Are they better than us?

Sorry to say when it comes to the Federal Government you have to realize that "Justice" is defined as "Just Us"

Companies, with the governments blessing started dumping retirement plans 20 years ago and telling workers to plan their retirement around SS and medicare. Workers were told to save enough through a 401k to supplement those benefits. We did and now in the 11th hour they want to change all the rules? How in the world do they think it will work? And at the same time they have not considered canning a single public sector pension? Every single public sector pension should have a PBGC style cap put on it before they screw us again?

Think this one through .... they want us to work longer ...... as we age our medical expenses rise ..... US Airways is self-insured. How long will US Airways be around if we all have to work until 80? I don't know what the solution is? But it's not the Ryan plan! Under the Ryan plan you work until you die or until US Airways buckles insuring a bunch of 70 year old employees.

Where is the CWA on this ..... IM hearing nothing from them?
