What's new

New East A320 configuration.

Ok, so we see that this new male uniform will be used for the seasonal service to ATH?

Can any of you show us the senior mama's new uniform to ATH?

No, but he has a badge around his neck and gets a special briefing from the FA's along with instructions not to get off the plane without them.

get off before?! that's illegal anyway!

You are way too young, but back in the days, Braniff "Stewardesses" would remove an article of clothing during each service in the flight ...

... use your imagination...

Woo, the only thing this thread needs to be complete is... more cowbell.

kinglobjaw, if you think high-value pax are screaming in delight at a 16F 321, 6C 757 and the new 320, which is by all accounts the worst-configured mainline aircraft in American skies, you're certifiable.

No airline is perfect, but US is headed in the wrong direction, and fast.

I'd rather talk about his "uniform"

So does he have to put his hands under this thighs during takeoff?

If he were in the jumpseat, I think it would make any female or gay male in the 1st row REALLY enjoy the flight more on the A320s!

'scuse me, can I have the salad for lunch?'

I'll get my pruning shears

don't worry, I'll be careful VERY careful

when I was 16, I was a Braniff brat... but there was no internet on which I could get into trouble.

I support none of the above. All I'm doing is saying what Kirby told me about the new config. And other than that, I still enjoy flying the airline, and will continue to do so, not because I support the moves of the management, but I think US is still a decent airline and frontline employees are some of the best. The new downgrades havent exactly impacted me as much. I am avoiding the A320's at all cost as the 757's. Besides 26F>16F, I am not too worried about A321's Y as Tempe,AZ has never dealt with 321's so they wont sabotage them that much. And I've never flown with US to Europe so the 757 6C hasn't greatly impacted me either.

I'm still somewhat amazed at the wealth of info available on the airlines, as long as one is willing to wait for it to be available.

The Consumer Air Fare Report is published quarterly, with about an 5 month delay. Thus, the latest available is for 2Q06. It has a number of tables, but table 5 shows short-haul markets (less than 750 miles) with a breakdown of fares paid by O&D passengers in that market by carrier (only those having 10% or more market share).

For example, the first market that US/HP shows up in is CVG-PHL and shows this for US:

9,130 40% | $289 | $100 8% | $675 7% | 37%

The first 2 numbers (9,130 40%) are the number of O&D passengers we carried in this market and our market share.

Next is the average fare ($289) we collected from O&D passengers in this market.

Then comes the lowest "fare bucket" - the lowest $25 fare increment that at least 5% of O&D passengers paid. In this case, 8% of O&D passengers paid between $75 and $100.

Next is the highest "fare bucket" - 7% of our O&D passengers paid from $650 to $675.

Last is the percentage of O&D passengers who paid at least 3 times the lowest "fare bucket" - 37% paid at least $300. In this particular market, with it's high top fares, it's not surprising to see such a high percentage paying 3X the low "fare bucket". It's a very different story in lower fare markets.

Finally, the average for the 288 short-haul markets where US/HP is shown. Leaving out number of passengers and market share, the numbers look like this:

$196 | $125 15% | $275 9% | 6%

To collect an average O&D fare of $196, we sell 15% of the tickets for between $100 and $125. At the higher end, we sell 9% of tickets for between $250 and $275. Finally, we sell 6% of tickets for over $375.

So where's all this leading? It sure seems to me that we're adding seats to sell to the lower end fare purchasers - primarily those who travel occassionally and are looking for the cheaper fare. Meanwhile, we're taking away perks (and seats to upgrade to) from the upper end fare purchaser - usually those who travel regularily and will take their money to whomever offers the best value per dollar spent.

For every one of those 9% in the high "fare bucket" that leaves because of the changes, we have to sell at least 2 tickets to the folks who look for the low "fare bucket" fares to come out even. For every one of those 6% that pay at least 3X the low "bucket" fare, we have to sell at least 3 tickets to those looking for those low "bucket" fares. Lose enough of the higher-yield traffic and pretty soon 100% LF won't pay the bills.

Nope, at least as far as I recall. We did have one particular ORF F/A who was really proud of her "augmentation" and loved to show them off to the pilots, though. She also loves teasing brand new F/E's by rubbing against them when passing coffee to the "front seaters".....

While you are correct in your observation about the need to sell 2 or 3 seats to make up lost revenue from 1 lost high end seat, could it not be the case that the high end pax is still there.

Maybe as some on these boards have stated "Its the fares, stupid". They are still there, justmore savvy shoppers. The corporate travel depts, secretaries etc. have gotten good at getting the best deal. How they get these deals when our website doesnt ever work begs to be explained.

Now we have to ballance the offered amenities, seats, perks etc. To get the return customer. Unfortunately that is not something the frontline employee usually has anything to do with. We work with the tools given. Something else lost on the folks on this board im affraid.

Oh well just my take on it, now back to saving the world, one landing at a time.

In some ways, it may be immaterial. Whether they find a way to pay lower "high-end" fares to restore the "value balance" or simply take their money elsewhere for better perceived value, our average yield drops. We either make it up with LF, which means adding passengers faster than the reconfiguration adds seats, or face a drop in PRASM.

With only 7/10 of a cent difference between East RASM and CASM in 3Q06, hope for the increasing LF solution - or buy the primary competitor......

At last I know what's wrong with this airline Kirby is getting his advice from a 17 year old with a direct line.
