What's new

QIK on SABRE..

we have the new system its not too bad i have heard that the classes are ok but it is too long but st the same time the new system does a lot more than what sabre did.

Qik on Sabre is actually very easy. The only drawback is that it's very different from what Sabre users are now use to. It will take some time to learn how to navigate the menus...but everyone will get used to it just like they did with Sabre. The good thing is that the company is giving us 3 or 4 months to practice with it before they cut Sabre off. And Sabre is going to be cut off. It's going away. So anyone who does not learn the new program will be in trouble. After you go to class you need to try to start using it immediately. Try to pretend that Sabre doesn't even exist right now. That way you won't miss it when it's gone!

I'm one of those Sabre ticketing masters...so I will certainly miss Sabre. There's very few of us "legacy" people around anymore, who actually understand how to read a fare ladder and how a reissue really works.....

I just got out of class on Saturday and I'm going to sign into QIK on Monday and apply it to real world scenarios. We'll see how well I can navigate a TIPS reissue in QIK. I'm actually looking forward to it. The frustrating part about this is getting used to the differences between SHIFT CTRL and ALT and then the umpteen different follow up program keys to select a specific function. It'll take me a couple of weeks to get used to it, but I think I'll be OK with it.

Hi, Is anyone working as a QIK assist agent for the next few months helping with the transition. I'm doing it just wonder is anybody else or have you seen the agents in your city yet?

Glad to hear that you are going to try it right away. Give it a chance because it will take some getting used to. It's not difficult...just different. The Shift+ keys mostly bring up a box to enter something into...the CTRL+ keys mostly bring up a specific set of menu (function) keys and the ALT+ keys are mostly just access stuff like calendar, calculator, etc. You will mostly stay in the CTRL+G (gate checkin keypad) and the CTRL+Z (finalize keypad) if you are working a gate position.

My only gripe aboout QIK for reissue is that most of the time when you hit F5 to find the unflown value in a ticket most of the time it does NOT WORK. So you are reading the fare ladder, figuring out the base fare and US TAX then the additional taxes, putting that in and storing it.. so you can RUN THE REISSUE. Hopefully this will get better. ALSO seats are much easier to assign in QIK.!!!!!!

I work in rez(west side) and we have the same problem with the unflown value. With some ta records the unflown value will not work at all. Something to do with the way taxes are placed differently in their records. Its great when the key works but sometimes its nice to stay on your toes and read linears especially with international taxes. Seats are a no brainer. I hope all of you find that its not so bad. Good Luck to all of you and I know the professional in each of you will prevail. Mama

As someone who does training for a living I would encourage everyone to start working with the new system as soon as you complete training.

Adult Learners do not retain information without significant practical application immediately. I could go on to explain all the junk abut how the mind works with adults but I don't want to put you to sleep.

As someone who uses a mouse as opposed to the command line structure I'm constantly amazed at the number of keystrokes required to complete a task in SABRE. Does QIK have more or less keystrokes required to complete similar tasks?

Piney...you hit the nail on the head. The company has set this up so that employees have 4 months to get proficient with QIK on Sabre before they cut Sabre off. But some folks have been out of training class for a month and havn't even tried it yet. The common excuse for not using it is: "I don't feel comfortable with it". Well, duh, how can you get comfortable with it if you don't use it?

There are some stations that have not received their new SHARES agent sine in codes...as you have to sign into shares first before you toggle to Sabre...QIK assist agents will be visiting stations starting this week and will be encouraging everyone to get on board with it.

Another Guru's thoughts:

I'll try to be open about, what seem to be, the inevitable transition to QIK.
I've always command-line systems, whether United's Apollo, or those used by Northwest, British, American and Qantas. It's what I'm used to and, once mastered, have never been a problem for me. Such systems may be challenging for some but I think this is mainly due to poor training on the company's part and, perhaps for some, a lack of initiative. QIK after all is merely an interface that exists between the user and the actual system. Essentially the same commands are going on behind the scenes.
I worry that such an interface will inhibit me from using the system to its potential. In other words, unless an entry or procedure has been developed to such a such, I won't be able to do it. There are so many entries that help me do my job better, entries that others with whom I work don't even know about. They're not secrets but rather entries I've found in the system that others haven't been taught or sought out.
Many HP agents say we'll love the system but so often I see disastrous results from these agents using QIK such as messed up etkts, reissues creating new PNR's rather than the rebooked flights housed within the original PNR. Also the lack of anything like ATAC concerns me. All cash reports are done manually. Such 1930's technology makes me wonder what else looms for us that is equally backward.

I know people at UAL and at AA and AS who have used the FASTAIR interphase with Apollo and SABRE as well as the native versions. They all said that if know what you are doing in native system, it's hands down better than FASTAIR. The trick is becoming proficient in the native system; it does take longer than learning FASTAIR. I suspect it's same thing with QIK.

Now as far as native SHARES to native SABRE goes...that would be another story. From what I hear, SABRE is a much better system. But that doesn't really matter anymore.

Of course, the rumor is that eventually US will go with AMADEUS (assuming continued Star Alliance memmbership, or course 😀 )

Shift Q will give you a popup of all of the Ctr-Shift-ALT keypads. And I think you can use Shift-N to get a native shares popup--I'm not sure if there is a popup for Sabre.
