Us 757's

NASA's 757 also came from EAL via the desert. It flew around for several years with the original EA "hockey stick" livery, with a small NASA Langley Research Center decal above the windows. Supposedly when they were overhauling it for the NASA mission, they found a good stash of cocaine hiden onboard, a souvenir of EA's South American network.

After a few years, NASA got some money and painted the aircraft white.

NASA did the same thing with the two B747's they got from American Airlines that Piggy-Back the shuttles between Edwards AFB and the Kennedy Space center.

Those two birds retained the AA-esque theme for a quite some time...now , like the B757 they have been painted white with blue cheat line stripes..and the tail logo is the NASA swoop logo.

Alright then, I'm going out to LAS on Wed morning with a quick turnaround...I'll report any mx delays I might encounter. Hopefully there will be none, that could get expensive!

These 757's have become the derges of the fleet. Always dirty, lav doors never work right - won't close, won't open, internal lav lights don't function properly. 8 FC seats is a joke. On one recent flight to LAS I was one of 14 US1's sitting in the back and I had a Y fare - no help with only 8 FC seats.

Perhaps 90 or 95% of the people going to LAS are on vacation, but 5-10% are going for business, and when the US1's and US2's are on vacation they deserve a decent chance of an upgrade. I have even flown through LAX and taken a cheap R/T from LAX to LAS just to get F/C on the long hauls but even that can backfire. On the last trip to LAX it was a 321 and one day before the flight inventory still had no availability for upgrades with 21 of 26 F/C seats open. That really ticked me off - then my connection got cancelled due to maint and I ended up going through PHL and sat next to a nice (but sadly 300 pound) women in row 20 something - so she enjoyed her seat and half of mine.

I do also hope that the new management team will institute some consistency, and a reasonable number of FC seats and instruct inventory not to hold back more than 50% of the seats for last minute upgrades. I can understand a 25%-50% hold back - but 80%? Just ticks off the frequent business traveler. Mike.

Yup. I've paid about $900 for a ticket to sit in coach. You need to book a week in advance and get the A-fare. If you can't do that, there is a 0 to 10% chance that if you check in online at exactly 24 hours in advance, you'll get the upgrade at the very very last moment. Sometimes you can't even get the A-fare.

I also want to add that the Int F/A's who are now working the LAS flights are EXCELLENT.

Umm, no.

3 of 9 daily PIT-CLT are 757s, including two morning depatures.

1 of 9 CLT-PIT is a 757--the prime time evening departure.

2 of 10 PHL-PIT are 757s--including the 8am.

1 of 11 PIT-PHL is a 757--the 7.30 departure.

3 of 10 CLT-PHL are 757s--including the 8a and 7.20p departures.

4 of 10 PHL-CLT are 757s, including the 6.30, 8.15, and 4.35p departures.

I can pretty much guarantee you that on a weekday, these flights are most certainly not made up of mom, pop, the kids, and 6 steamer trunks on the way to see The Mouse. As a US1, I was once 18th on the list (checkin in at 20 hours before). As a US2, I've been as low as 33rd on the list.

From the inside, the easy way to tell the ex-EAL girls from the factory fresh ones are by the side walls and PSU's.

The ex-EAL girls have side walls similar to the 737-300, with the lights right over the windows.

The factory fresh ones have the lights at the point where the side wall meets the overhead. They also have semi-adjustable reading lights in the PSU and have newer type buttons, including 2 F/A buttons.

I think the first year or so of 757 service had them in the ex-EAL configuration with 2 lavs in front of 3L and one in front of 3R. There was a single row of coach seats in front of 2L, where they ended up moving the lav to. IIRC, those planes were also the first with flightlink.

600 - 610 are old eastern planes.

610 was not an EA bird, it was the first brand new 757 US got from Boeing, it was the "Ideas That Fly" plane.

600-609 were EA birds as well as 618 which I believe 618 was returned in the first BK.

You're right.
618 came from AWA (who got it from EAL) during their bankruptcy, that's why it's out of sequence.

I have a friend that works for HP. He said they play trivia, I guess its sorta like Cranium but on the tv screens until just before landing. Thats kinda cool they do that to keep the pax busy.

I don't understand why any frequent flyer would fly on a US Airways 757 to LAS. Fly UA instead; you are virtually guaranteed an E+ seat.

On Delta, with the equivalent to US1 or US2 status, I have been upgraded to First Class on a 757 100% of the time. With 24 seats, it's impossible not to upgrade if you're eligible, except maybe bottom rung elite on a really full flight.

USAirways is an idiot airline for replacing 2/3 of the First Class cabin with coach seating. Don't play their games.

I never really cared one way or another if I was seated in first or coach. It's just a couple of hours in the air. But I know some people feel like they have had their first born child taken away from them and slapped in the face, if they don't clear the upgrade list. IMO there are a lot bigger things in life to get upset about.

True...especially for flights of an hour or two, but four or five hours on a full flight makes a big difference. You can't say that the middle seat in row 22 is comparable to row 2. This is especially true if you're getting off the flight in a suit and headed straight to a business meeting or an important dinner. FFs know this all too well. Like you, I've chuckled at the desperate antics of some pax who don't get their upgrade -- but I certainly understand why they value it! Like many US frequent flyers, I have avoided the 757s (when practical) since the change in configuration.

That's because you are from the West Coast and not as uptight as we are on the East Coast. That is also why WN does so well in California and that is why US's most FF are so loyal to US. It's not the free drinks or the "status" of being in FC-- I work hard inflight and I get a lot more accomplished in FC than I can in coach. So, I book A fares as much as possible to get confirmed on long haul flights.

Number three, our 600, was delivered to EAL in 1981 and began revenue service late that year, despite accounts giving 1982 as the official revenue startup for the type.
Just a little trivia for 'ya, no extra charge.
[post="290881"][/post]

Untrue. Boeing did not even fly the prototype 757 until February 1982. Deliveries to launch customers Eastern and British Airways followed in late 1982. Eastern conducted the first 757 revenue service on January 1, 1983, with BA following shortly thereafter.

If I'm not mistaken, US Airways reduced the First Class seating to 8 from 24 because of a lawsuit regarding wheelchair storage and then probably due to revenue or lack thereof.
