Latest united airlines alpa pilot update ,,
A Message From the Master Chairman, Captain Wendy Morse
At the IAD CEO exchange this week, it became clear that the UAL CEO’s hands-off approach to negotiations is not going to serve him or the new United well. When asked about the pilot contract, Jeff Smisek spoke of not asking for concessions, yet his flight operations and labor relations people at the table have been passing scheduling sections that continue to be concessionary. He was also unaware of provisions in the Transition and Process Agreement that called for an eight-week period of negotiations to a JCBA TA ending on October 5, 2010.
His ignorance was not limited to the pilot process, as he stated that he was committed to a contract for the flight attendants, which was called into question by AFA leadership stating that the company has not met with the AFA outside of required Section 6 meetings, to which Jeff Smisek reportedly deferred to Mike Bonds, Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Mike Bonds was reportedly also unaware of the answer, although was asked the exact same question by the exact same AFA rep a month ago, where he said he would find out from Doug McKeen, Senior Vice President of Labor Relations.
With today’s Teamster’s announcement that the United mechanics voted down a tentative agreement, none of the legacy United Airlines unions have a TA, much less a JCBA more than a year after the UAL/CAL merger announcement. This management team better change course immediately if they have any chance of fulfilling their 2011 Go Forward Plan objective of reaching joint collective bargaining agreements with ALL represented work groups. Clearly the problem lies with the company.
It is unfortunately clear that the CEO and his underlings are intent on squandering the goodwill allotted by the pilots and other employees of this airline. He had an opportunity to create a positive culture of truly working together and to date has failed.
