Lets' ask, What is a Union ? and what has the IAM done for us, in regards to the answer ?
A union is an organized group of workers who come together to make decisions about the conditions of their work. Through union membership, workers can impact wages, work hours, benefits, workplace health and safety, and other work-related issues. Under U.S. law, workers of all ages have the right to join a union. Having support from the union to ensure fair treatment in the workplace is one of the key reasons people join.
Many of the benefits and protections workers in all industries rely on today came about as a result of union efforts. These include the minimum wage, social security payments, an eight-hour day, weekends, overtime pay, protection from discrimination for people with disabilities and health and safety protections.
Well the first part tells me that although the elected AGC and Local Lodge members are in essence
in place to represent me in the IAM . In reality they are elected from a wide pool of voters, so a AGC
whose interests lie with a certain company may be elected by an election severly off balance. (ie.
someone who has company A's best interest at heart could win that election if company B's voters
are out numbered. There by ,severly impacting thier voice in thier represented body)
Now the second part highlighted speaks for itself.
1. An 8.0hr day is now 8.5hr day (prior to bankruptcy)
2. Weekends are now limited by the company to ensure more of a workforce
schedued for work on the weekend.(prior to bankruptcy)
3. Overtime pay, doulble time lost and sick time and holiday pay severly impacted
and not being negotiated back in the way the workforce seeks. (after bankruptcy but
being negotiated by the elected AGC's not from the bargaining workforce.)
The IBEW would represent me as a member and speak for me as a voter. I would have more say about
the issues that effect me. I would not have to rely on a sitting member on another board to represent
me in negotiations, creating in my view a serious conflict of interest.
