To shocker and all:
Shocker, my position has stayed firm over the past 5 years....get rid of the company's lapdog, who continues to oppress the masses as he continues his personal agenda of gain while securing premium Labor accords for the Board of Directors. While the appearance might be that I have 'flip flopped', as you say, the focus I have is the same and there is no flip flopping. Let me explain.
With the DL bylaws, it's quite difficult to get rid of the current regime so I always said that it was easier to get rid of the entire union than it was to get rid of the current leadership. I am finding out that that might not be true anymore. Afterall, the IAM structure, while not optimum, is useful if the shell can be preserved as the corrupted leadership is gutted.
Along the way, it became obvious to me, working next to my brothers and sisters at United, that the United people were infuriated by Canale so some of them told me that Delaney was putting a ticket together and he would need involvement by US AIRWAYS members. It seemed like everyone was finally talking the same language as Boss Canale has screwed over members so awful that most everyone he represents now hates him and sees him for who he is.
I contacted Rich and he encouraged me to try putting my energies into trying to change this union from within as opposed to without. Rich is a respectable guy so I found the thought interesting, although I didn't commit to this immediately. Along the way, I talked to other members who were willing to rise against Canale and put forth a great passion to remove him from office, so the members interest can finally be served instead of the company's. Although the central theme I have had over the past 5 years is to remove the company lapdogs from our union, I finally became convinced that it was possible to work within the IAM and oust the present regime....possible because of the solidarity of the members across both US AIRWAYS and United.
Also, because the NEW DIRECTION TEAM is made up of members who have an incredible amount of experience serving the membership....and that's what it's all about.....SERVICE.
The NEW DIRECTION team is made up of 3 current DL141 Eboard members, even Wallis whose Local supported our team. 4 Local Presidents of big locals [SFO, ORD, DEN, JFK] who have served thousands of members, 9 Local Grievance Chairman, 1 Local VP, a few Grievance committeepersons, and former grievance committeemen. Further, our two America West candidates were members of the negotiations team that initiated the section 6 at America west but they were thrown off the negotiations team once Canale decided to hand pick those that could agree to his plan to 'shelve section 6'.
Being a former Local Chairman in the early 2000's, I was aware of many of these NEW DIRECTION brothers/sisters and their endless service to the masses. I knew they served their membership well and that I could support them with my full passion and energies to take this District back to the masses.
At any rate, how long one has been in leadership means nothing to me. Leadership should never be tenured because in Leadership, it isn't the years of experience a leader has that is important, but rather what has the masses 'experienced' under your leadership? Therein lies the problem, Boss Canale's membership has experienced 'great pain' under his misleadership as he continues to try to divide the solidarity in favor of his company stance that his UA board members love him for. I mean, the Canale supporters are saying that Canale has years of experience. What does that mean? Does years of experience mean anything if you suck at what you're doing or if you don't listen to one damn word? I would say that Canale has years of experience at representing management, so what is that worth? Canale gives Labor a Bad name and a dirty face. Plus almost his whole slate is made up of only yes men and yes women.
The majority of Canale's team can't even carry the nomination of the people they themselves represent. His slate is gaining plenty of experience getting voted against by their own membership. While the NEW DIRECTION TEAM members have almost unanimous respect and nomination of those it serves. This should tell the masses something. The masses should have a problem with someone who can't come through for his own team in his OWN station, but then tells other stations to vote for him. I gotta problem with that.
At any rate, my main focus is on securing a TA for fleet service that has dignity and respect back. I'm not sure when that's going to happen, but with the vast network of solidarity from coast to coast, I'm sure it will happen.....soon enough. No thanks to the other team who already said 'they did the best they could do'. We'll get that fair contract and it will be the solidarity of the masses that will collect it. The company's chief negotiator, Boss Canale, has been 'Bit## SLapped" to the sidelines and the chief negotiator now is the network of solidarity and NOW nobody is between YOU and Hemenway. Time to earn some much deserved respect and there is NO DOUBT that any TA that will be approved will HAVE to be much better than the one that we crammed back up the company's arse.
