So when you factor that in, the Short Call pilot that lives in base is home 22 days a month compared to your 13 days home a month and making $9,600 to your $7,225. Not to mention he or she doesn't have to drive 3 1/2 hours from ATL each way like you do. Hmmmmm....which one has the better quality of life???

I work 8 to 10 days a month (75 hour option), turn the phone off every night, and don't have to live in CLT.
 
Well since I spent 6 years at a commuter as a captain and check airman, flying turboprops up north, I'd say say I'm not afraid of four stripes. Unlike the east, I do not find it acceptable to carry the responsibilities of being captain for FO pay. You guys are willingly siting on the worst contract in the industry just so you can grab four stripes? What, are you short of the 1000 121 PIC for the Southwest app?

Got news for ya, if you have an ATP, are typed on the aircraft and have your medical you have equal liability for the aircraft just like the "Captain" if you knowingly allow him/her to violate FAR's or know they violate it, don't report it and they find out.

Three or four stripes are irrelevant. This ain't the old days.
 
The average short call captain on the A320 in CLT flew 25 to 30 hours in Oct. For Nov, the avg short call captain has around 20 hours so far. That means they are working no more than 8 days a month for an average of 77 to 78 hours of pay (76 guarantee, but deadheads pay above guarantee) So when you factor that in, the Short Call pilot that lives in base is home 22 days a month compared to your 13 days home a month and making $9,600 to your $7,225. I flew 11 days last month, 22:28 total time. At 76 hours guarantee I made 418.84 per hour. I love short call reserve. My wife is getting tired of "signing my logbook" each week so I keep current at home, if you know what I mean! (Wink, wink, nod,nod! ;-))

Contract is hour and a half normal driving distance to parking lot. Lots of places to live around CLT, DCA or PHL with approximate 90 mile radius. Weather in CLT is gorgeous!

$85 X 85 hours = $7225

$124 X 71 hours = $8804

That's a 22 % raise to be on reserve 19 days a month.

It doesn't take much to impress you.

So then why did you do your pay calculation above as 85x85? It should have been 75x85 which would make your pay $6,375 vs $9,600 (%50 raise or just shy of $40K more a year) and you actually work slightly more. Luckily, you only have to drive to work 3 times a month from ATL instead of 4 times. Gas isn't that expensive these days and I'm sure that 3 1/2 hours each way gives you plenty of time to think about how much you love your job and how much you love commuting to ATL.

Well good for your and "responsibility ethic" with DUI as your CEO you will be sittin in that right seat a long, long time, glad your used to it, other than that good luck at your SWA interview!
 
Because I'm the exception to the rule, the majority are on the 85 hour option.

If you think Reserve on LOA 93 is a good deal good for you.

Thank you for admitting that you are the exception. You're right.....the folks on the 85 hour option will only get a 25% pay increase for working 8 less days a month. It is a pilots choice to live where he wants to. Pilots who choose to commute lose out on the opportunity to make more and have what most would consider a better quality of life. It's a decision that everyone has to make sooner or later. Reserve on LOA 93 is not that bad as long as you choose not to commute. As End of ALPA said, 90 minutes normal driving time from the airport parking lot gives you alot of places to live that would be considered "In Base".

I hear ya! Sorry to see that you are working so much. As a "Winter part time" Intl F/O, I don't work nearly that hard! After commuting for 20+ years out of FL to "fly a block", the smartest thing I ever did was move to base. Lets me bid higher paying equipment, short call (76 hours + deadheads), weekends off, never answer the phone when I don't have to. In the dead of winter last year I was making $800+ an hour and the only "problem" I run in to, is keeping my landing currency up to date. I seem to be able to "get by" on LOA 93, with my six figure+ income.

All in all, it's not too bad! I just wish I made as much money as my Neighbors think I do, had as much time off as my Brother thinks I do and got laid as much as my Wife thinks I do. Being an airline pilot ain't what it used to be, but it still beats some nine to five desk job. I particularly like the part about being able to do a "mind dump" when I walk off the plane.

Now maybe I've had more experience with the FAA because I've been a chief pilot and check airman at a 121 carrier, but I've got news for you: 80% of the time the FO gets a slap and a letter, the captain gets far worse and basically loses his career. Do you guys have a clue about anything?
