Just got the September issue of Air Transport World. Editorial on page 20 "Ten Years Later" By Aaron Karp, great article about the magazine's outlook for the future a few days before the September 11 attacks.

Best part? "US would be acquired by America West Airlines (AWA adopted the US Brand)."

The experts know.... B)

AWA competed with SWA for 20 years in PHX. How well did Us Airways do against SWA in BWI?

PHX future, pitter patter of US Airways LAS little feet ,

"The top five largest scheduled airlines at McCarran in number of passengers carried in the first 11 months of 2009 are Southwest Airlines (38.3%), US Airways/US Airways Express (11.8%), United Airlines/United Express (6.9%), Delta Air Lines/Delta Connection (5.6%), and American Airlines (5.5%)"

"The US Airways night-flight hub operation, established in 1986 by predecessor America West Airlines, made the carrier McCarran's second busiest airline. Due to the 2008 energy crisis the night hub was closed in September 2008. US Airways closed its crew base on January 31, 2010.[15] On August 31, 2011, US Airways announced that it will keep shrinking its operations by cutting 40% of its flights out of Las Vegas. The airline plans to eliminate nonstop service to Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Fresno, Los Angeles, and San Francisco by early 2012 leaving the airline with only flights from Las Vegas to its 3 hub in Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and its focus city Washington Reagan National Airport"

MM obviously doesn't know what he's talking about - his posts prove it. Obviously airline economics is not his strong suit (if he even has a strong suit). Just in the last couple or weeks or so we've seen posts by east pilots about flights to/from PHX full of connecting passengers. US would lose most of those passengers without the PHX hub to collect them for the flights to/from the east coast. Close the PHX hub, kiss that revenue goodbye and US is back in BK with no plan.
