Can you say FMLA, no different from anyone else. This man and his family went through hell and back.
Actually, unpaid leave with the use of sick or vacation time is the usual method if there is to be any pay. Paid leave is not a requirement of an employer on FMLA otherwise, and re-affrimed under Strickland v. Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Birmingham -- "The FMLA explicitly permits employers to provide covered leave on an unpaid basis. 29 U.S.C. § 2612". Furthermore, "[a]n eligible employee may elect, or an employer may require the employee, to substitute any of the accrued paid vacation leave, personal leave, or medical or sick leave of the employee for ... any part of the 12-week period".
I do not believe that US provides pay while a ramper is FMLA, outside of earned sick or vacation time, so to have regular wages while absent from work due to FMLA would be a rather generous benefit provided by the IAM.
