Strike Now

No airline makes money on every route they fly. The goal is to try to make money on them. Some people just seem to throw out that certain airlines(Southwest has been accused in the past months since they entered PHL) are losing money on routes on purpose in order to run other airlines out of the market. In the case of BWI and PHL, it is a by-product IMO. If not, then explain to me how America West survives with their ops in both PHX and LAS, two strongholds of Southwest?

A management know-it-all in a Geo Metro... at the golf course? I'm embarrassed for ya. Sorry to tell you, I know for a fact that loser management I know has been on the golf course on a few fridays with in the last 6 months. So don't try the "we're innocent" ploy, I know better.

In case you don't know (and you do not) double time is gone, as well as holiday pay. We also lost 5 holidays that management still has. Enjoy your Friday after thanksgiving with your family, while we are working for half-time.

You sure must be another "big wheel" that AA can't do without.

"The goal is to try to make money on them".

Markkus!! Now that took some deep thought. So in your HO what do you think it will take to stop this race to the bottom in which Southwest is definitly a part of. Their not going to be immune forever nor is any other LCC.

Wow, you got double time? As long as I've been in SOC I have never received double time. He11, if I get stuck past my shift I have to stay a full hour (not 50 min) past my shift to get paid for that extra hour and even then it is a straight time. OH, if I get held over for 4 hours becasue of a sick call or a no show, that is at straight time also.

I don't feel so bad about getting holliday pay any more. Guess that makes up for all the OT and raises I never got.

The sad thing is Scorpion is that my little quote has been much more enlightening than any "strike talk" that you've been giving. Go ahead and strike, no one will care. You are correct about them not being immune forever, but by the time anything happens the capacity will be reduced by a few airlines' demises. Capacity is the main reason why no one is paying substantial amounts of money to go anywhere. Anyone with simple economics knows that supply has to equal demand in order to make money. right now it does not. Enjoy not being in the unemployment line after your strike. When US or DL or AA furloughs people, it's not a good thing. The problem is that they are trying to shrink capacity in order to make money. In theory this is the correct thing to do.

You speak of the ole' pre-regulation days. I am quite sure you won't find management out to lunch drinking martinis...Seems like you are stuck in the old days...just like unions. Unions have outlived their welcome...just IMHO.

By the way, I don't drive a BMW...just a Geo Metro for me..I don't get paid the big bucks 😉

He's probably telling the truth. Recently our Station Manager quit, he went to DHL as a mechanic. I heard he only was getting paid around $80K to manage the $75 million/year maint dept whereas TWU Rep Bobby Gless, who drives a convertable BMW and a Vette, gets $120,000 plus expenses (Martinis etc) to manage the AA/TWU maintenance division, which brings in around $9 million in dues plus another $2 million from the company. The twu pays its reps $40k more to manage one seventh the amount of money. When is the last time you saw a paid TWU International officer quit?

I fully support everyone's right to do so but, doesn't this "strike" crap come up every year about this time?

I thought they were going to do it last year too but as usual, it turned out to be a load of hooey.

Fact is, there isn't enough time, nor is there a reason to strike before the holidays by the organized groups, and the groups that don't have a union couldn't get their collective asses together long enough to learn to spell the word strike, let alone organize one.

Love the banter, but this topic is a waste of board space - it'll never happen.

So you are TWU TOO?

By the way what did you get for Holiday pay? Time and a half for the day if worked or an extra eight hours comp time? If you got the comp time then you got double time. 16 hrs pay for eight hours worked.

SOC? Maybe it should be called SUC.

TWU? You have to be kidding. Me in a union? Ha that's a good one. I'll need to write that one down too.

Let me type a little slower so you can keep up.

Stay with me here, there were two, count them on your fingers, two issues raised in my post.

First was overtime. We do not get it. If we work past our 8 hours, we get straight time only if we stay at least 1 hour past our shift. Funny how they always send us home just before the hour ends.

Second issue was holiday pay. IF you want to take a moment to read the last line of my post, I acknowledged that we did indeed get holiday pay or we can flex them and get additional days off (I chose the flex).

The original point I was making (somewhat sarcastically I’ll admit) was that we have never received OT (that mean no double time, time and a half, time and one fourth, time and one sixteenth …) for any work we have done. I do not feel guilty for the holiday pay that I get since it makes up for all the OT you received when we got none.

This is why AA has a culture of distrust between management and the unions.Everyone is worried about what everyboby else earns instead of fixing the company. Each work group needs to watch out for its own pay and benefits instead of worrying about someone elses compensation.
Since TWU members are hourly instead of salary issues such as 1.5, 2.0 and Holiday pay do matter. We do not get comp time.

Trust me, the "distrust" is not due to salary.

Fill us in...

In your opinion, why is there distrust between management and unionized labor?
