What's new

transcon 767s

No it wasn't. I worked the 76 transcon (PHL/LAX) in '01 before furlough. I'm going to say it was after 9/11. Since I've been back in '08, haven't seen any.

There were some 75's going to LAS, but they seem to be gone now as well. Its all buses of varying sizes, but mostly the 321.

In March 02 there was still a 767 LAX-CLT. We had an in-flight medical emergency and the Captain asked me about diverting to OKC. The patient, sitting in 1B, responded and I spent the remainder of the trip on the jump seat, observing the woman. Both of the FAs took turns flirting with me, which would not have been so weird if my wife wasn't in 2A. We arrived in CLT 45 minutes early, turned over the info to the EMTs and jumped on an earlier connection home.

The last 767 transcon I remember flying was LAX-CLT in 2002. I made Silver in April that year, and I remember not getting upgraded, so it had to have been some time after April. I also remember receiving a bagged breakfast consisting of a packaged bagel/cream cheese, a few other items. US did the free bagged meal very briefly after 9/11 before eliminating free meals altogether.

It was. I recall flying on a 767 LAX-PIT in January, 1997, in both directions. I'm pretty sure that was the last time I flew that route on a 767.

It was ALWAYS full, too. I still don't know why they dropped that flight.

It's pretty well known by the beancounters that from a P&L perspective, you don't fly wide-bodies domestically due to the higher CASM and opportunity cost to deploy on more profitable routes.

The reason why DL and UA do it so much is because their fleet just has so many of them. Even DL readjusted in bankruptcy and deployed more to transatlantic.

In the case of US, the 767 that flew CLT-LAX was pulled (when Mr. Siegel and his team came onboard and "rescheduled the airline") to fund new trans-atlantic/Carib flying like DUB/SNN. In addition, compounding the problem was the 767 the company lost in PHL back in 2000/2001 from the engine run-up disaster that caused a total write-off of the shell. It was never replaced (though 330's were/did come).

Under this management team, I doubt you'll ever see another one operate domestically except for aircraft placement (i.e. PHL to CLT and vice versa, etc.).

I flew it PHL-LAX as recent as late 2002, maybe even early 2003. I don't think they can fly to LAX now even if they wanted to because the wingspan infringes on a neighboring WN gate.

Otherwise, it's simple to justify why it operates on higher yielding routes to Carib and European locations anyway.

I don't ever remember flying on a 767 LAX-PHL. How did I miss that one? I don't even remember seeing it as an option when I booked. Was it a regularly scheduled route?

Deb - it was usually the 5-6pm departure westbound and the 7 am departure Eastbound.
