WEST/EAST transition training classes

Nope. Pilots can no longer fill in for an FA on the East.

When the minimum crew is 1 the "A" must stay. They cannot have another FA fill in for them. If the minimum crew is two then it is "A" and "B", and so forth (going front to back, front to back).

The "A" will also do a secondary cabin check after everybody is off the AC and another crew is not taking over the plane.

You must be West. This is not East policy.

Seems to me the reason AWA is not interested in senority is that there is none there. The A is not treated as a coveted position or person. Our A can delegate to junior. A runs the show, its up to her what is done and what goes on. Holy moly...those A's on int'l would freak if they lost their control.

What does the West pay the A position domestic/int'l?

It is quite silly ... this West policy ... ONLY THE A can stay!!!! (on thru's) I mean really as long as FAR ... sorry CRM  is followed the FAA really could care less who stays. I never heard of a secondary check but you do have to tell the ground and inbound crew of number of thru pax.

I find if the flight has a long enough ground time I get them off the plane. Nicely of course 😛

Well, it is not just thru passengers. If the other crew is not there to take the plane out, the "A" is still the last one off as they have to do the secondary check of the AC. It is all starting to fade, but if memory serves me correctly it is also required whenever you leave the AC and another crew is not taking over and the last flight of the day.

One of the reasons for the secondary check that the trainer mentioned, was a blind passenger being left onboard the AC for a long period of time in PHX.

Anyway, it just sounds like the "A" is just getting more responsibility for the AC.

You will get the low down in training. They say it will all start on May 1, but then they said on integration day. So, I am not sure if they mean May 1 or if they mean integration day. I thought they couldn't integrate the two companies until contracts were settled, but what do I know.

Looks like I stand corrected, at least at some point in the integration process. Presumably, at some point they will revise the FOM, since it still states:

Exception. A pilot may substitute for a required flight attendant when
passengers remain onboard. The flightdeck crewmember must be identified to the passengers and be located in the forward part of the cabin prepared to perform emergency evacuation duties until the flight attendant returns.

Until that changes, an East pilot can legally fill in for an East F/A with thru passengers on board.

Yes, on the west side ONLY the A can stay with thru passengers and must perform the secondary cabin check when leaving the aircraft. So, as of May 1 or whenever we actually achieve one operating certificate, the rule will stand for the east as well. I am not saying I agree with the rule or like it, just saying that it exists. In most cases, crews work out something that works for all them, especially if the A has a commuter flight to catch.

Yes, one America West flight Attendant left a blind passenger onboard and the plane was tugged to the hanger. Some of the MX staff found the passenger and helped get this passenger to there proper destination.
Also it has happend to one flight attendant twice and then she was canned and shown the 1L door.

This is why we have a primary/secondary checks. Also said to help to make sure all doors are disarmed.

I'm on a trip now and could probably check the afa site to find out but I really thought the process of who stays/goes and delegates was contractual. Hmmmm.

I get to go to this "Confluence of Minds" this week! I am getting aroused as I write this! My question, "Should I practice my Wonder Woman pose IN ADVANCE?" (Personally I prefer a Charlie's Angel strut but obviously that got nixed in The Great Debate in The Desert) 😀 😛

I suggest doing some stretches to prepare. Finger excercises for the pointing and thumbs-up procedure. Hands-clasped-behind-the-back stretch for the "left-hand behind the back for focus" procedure. The military pose for blocking those pesky passengers while you do the monitoring. Shoulder and hip stretches since you are now in charge of opening the door. And most importantly...eye-rolling to keep-up with your classmates 🙄

Thanks for the laugh! It is true it is excessive but it does work. It is humerous....I have integration training on Tuesday here on the west......but we do not allow eye rolling so I have to be on good behavior.....
