Pension plans have plagued legacy cooperations for years. Companies that have been in business for such short periods haven't had to pay out retirements the way the major auto or airlines have. Airlines like WN or say car makers like Toyota in the States, don't have 80 years of pensions holding them down. And I am still waiting on why is WN the highest percentage of unionized workers yet the most profitable airline for over 30 years and highest paid workers?
Labor Relations not get back to you on how to answer yet?

some aspects of human nature is simply people want to protect, that may include ways of life or simply an investment or an idea of how things should be or what they hold close...the key word is protect.
lets say you know a guy and he has been your best friend for 30 years. you know he will always do the right thing, is dependable, you value that friendship more than anything else. one day your friend comes to you and ask for some money for whatever reason (of course you are going to help him)
you know for a fact he will pay you back based on his good character, but you ask him to sign a paper that says you gave him the money and he owes you a certain amount. he does not question why you are asking him to sign a paper, because he knows you wouldnt be giving him the money in the first place,
if you didnt trust him..(sort of a mutual respect thing going on here)
does that mean you do not trust him or question his character or intent to pay you back?
of course not.
it is a way to protect yourself in the event of an unforeseen situation something happens.. but you have it documented that you gave him the money..it is a way to protect yourself and has nothing to do with a lack of trust.
someone else may be in the exact same situation and gives his friend the money and not ask to sign anything and trust him 100 percent that he will pay them back timely.
there are probably people at WN who absolutely feel a contract is not necessary at all, based simply on the fact they know.. doing the right thing will always be considered first.
one way to look at it..the situation present is simply there is a majority of people who feel exactly the same way (the right thing will be done) but that majority views their version of protect as simply putting it in writing.
...mutual respect goes both ways too, if an idea of respect is really present someone else would not attempt to question your reasons.. why you feel something should be in writing because they would understand.. you do trust them you just see it differently even though, all are focused on doing the right thing.
as mentioned, a part of human nature is to protect, and each one of us will view protect differently even though.. we may all be on the same page.
oh why are they profitable?
besides the obvious,
low operating costs, point to point flying, customer service excellence, fuel hedging...people in the community love them,
oh yeah and...
they all know how to really run an airline, every single one of them.
