We have had many issues in our station with the orange vest. The GOM states that it is only required during the arrival or departure sequence (i.e.-wingwalking/marshalling) into and out of the gate. It also states that it is NOT required for normal servicing of the aircraft. Our local Mgmt. has implemented a rule where if you set foot outside, you must have it on. A little extreme, but most people comply. Kinda silly when you are in the bagroom away from aircraft, but it is what it is.

Bagchucker,

What is GOM? Does your local MGMT where them when they set foot outside? Do your mechanics? Do your Ticket and or Gate Agents?

GOM is the Ground Operations Manual for USAirways. It is the "bible" for procedure and protocol for our duties on the ramp and how to do them "by the book". Our station mgr. actually wears a safety vest when out in the ramp areas. Tkt/Gate agnts do not wear them, and the interesting thing about that is that we do not have jetways at my station, so the tkt/gate agnts actually cross the ramp to board the a/c during boarding/deplaning (we have airstairs...and I guess most reading can narrow down the station I am talking about).

No can do on the orange vests for GF here....SM's don't bother me either...my bad I guess.

I got too much other sh$t to carry around. I'm an old dog...and you know what they say about new tricks....

Another stupid HP rule if you ask me....

Actually, the orange safety vests were a pre-merger US Airways thing... sorry to burst your bubble. At AWA we rarely used them before this merger... if we did, they certainly were not spelled out in the GOM as a requirement. Personally, I am indifferent to the rule of safety vests. Yes, they are inconvenient at times and just another thing to carry around and I dont feel "safer" using them...

Well it wasn't enforced pre-merger at my stn, only post merger ...no bubble bursting here BC

Btw...HP has a lot of stupid rules I can't stand....

That goes both ways GF. I'm not trying to start a pi$$in match guy. Yea, HP or USAir, the vests suck. You all had and have weird procedures and we did and do, too. Put them together and that is why we have the mess that that we have now at the current USAirways... Rebel against the vest dude!!

My beef is this...HP rules on the ground are too restrictive. If we all followed the rules by the letter of the law we would take a delay on EVERY flight...no kiddin'....i.e. 2wingwalkers, orange vests, no walking between a tug & cart....etc...

Old US....had rules too...but hell we were all so senior no followed them... 😉

Not looking for a pissing match just explaining where I'm coming from...GF

Very rarely as a lead did we take a delay under HP rules. We always used two wingwalkers. Vests were worn when appropriate. And I NEVER walk inbetween carts on the gate, though yeah I don't always follow that rule. But the wingwalker and vest thing causing a delay? OK, this is very simple. If you show up 10 minutes before inrange (which I might add is the policy) with your required equipment (again, policy) they won't cause a delay. If you take or cause a delay because someone doesn't have a vest, the person without a vest is a moron. You can get your wands, but not the vest? Come on guys, whether you think the rule is worthwile or not, it only causes problems because people willfully violate it.

if you dont wear an orange vest, I find it hard to believe that the FAA wont fine the company?? I would double checck that because if you dont wear a safety vest, and say the plane gets damaged, not only is the person(s) who damaged it but you as a marshalller or wing walker without a vest would be at fault for not wearing a vest.

Tim,

What station gets the "All Nelson Award"? Have the votes been "officially tallied" yet? Will the trophy be presented at "christmas in October"? These things are top priority. LOL

Hey Oman,

You are getting slow. Top spot for me!!!!!! :bleh:
The "All-Nelson" Awards will be announced .....soon enough...as in today. We have "Top People" calculating the vote totals. I can tell you that right now, the people pm me and voting for the
"Mr All-Nelson Station" have put CLT comfortably in the lead at this time. LGA is a close second.

Separately, the "All-Nelson Academy" has determined that voting is now 'open' for voting for the "All-Nelson Boss hog biggest bozo remarks" Award. Your choices are
1. "I had a gun to my head and a knife to my belly" 3rd concession, January 2005. Truth was the leadership rolled over while collecting more pay.
2. "We believe these 1113 letters will keep the company from coming back" first concession August 2003. The truth was that the 1113 letters weren't worth squat.
3. "The concession stand is closed" 3rd concession, 2005. Truth was that the Canale concession stand is 24/7.
4. "Your choice is voting for this or waiting till 2009" 4th concession, Sept 2007. Truth was that the company came back.
5. "We protected PIT and secured MDA and express station work", sometime in 2003. Truth was that MDA never existed outside an office.
6. "Jets for Jobs and jobs for all" 2003. Truth was that there was no jobs.
7. "We fought like hell and busted our arse to get you a better pension. Truth was that the IAM pension was a $48.2 million concession to the much more valuable 401k.

Let the voting begin by pm me.

regards,
Tim Nelson
IAM Local Chairman, 1487, Chicago

How about this one.

8. "You are not recognized as Chairman.... please leave"

That one actually came back to haunt him. It proved his disconnect from the membership. His whole tenure was about the politics and not in the service to the membership.

His Legacy will be that he was rejected by the people in the end who never put him in power to start. He never had the confidence by vote of the people that he strove to keep under his thumb.

choosing from a list of stupid things out of RC's mouth is like choosing which present to open at Xmas difficult

Ok what world do you live in? Maybe the hubs work that way but my stn certainly doesn't have the luxury of showing up 10 minutes before inrange....GEEEZE I wish....

At our peak times our teams most of the time go from flight to flight. While they are finishing up one flight their other flight is already here....not too mention somedays we are short and also here in Fla we deal with severe storms daily in the summertime which constantly messes things up....

You say if I can get my hands on wands but not a vest....I sometimes can't find wands to use either! But maybe I should stick a pair in my pockets and carry them around with my vest!

Each stn has it's own unique challenges, it's unrealistic to paint a broad brush over every stn.

Not trying to be a rebel w/o a cause here but just doing what works for us. Believe it or not we do take safety serious here but we do it with a splash of common sense...GF

man, things must be really boring to be debating the orange vests. Ugh..
Well, here's my two pennies...
I personally hate the vests. Don't think wearing them would ever prevent or ever have prevented an accident. But rules are rules, even if they are dumb.
When I worked in LAS, management went around one summer with a high tech thermometer that when pointed at a surface, told them the temp. When pointed at Rampers, wearing vests, and working in the summer sun, the temps where well over 110 degrees. Very dangerous.
I vote to have reflective stripes in our uniforms instead of wearing all the extra gear. I've seen them on AA eagle employees, ugly but effective.
