The PI anti-nepotism policy went by the wayside in the early 1980s, about the same time they started hiring ex-Braniff, ex-TWA, etc. pilots. TJ and his father were simultaneously employed by PI, if my memory serves correctly. I agree that TJ was totally qualified and had competitive experience when he was hired. A lot of fathers recommended their sons and daughters.
But nepotism at Allegheny/USAir was notorious. You couldn't swing a dead cat in the PIT crew room without hitting some senior captain's kid in his shiny new uniform.
